WASHINGTON – The recent nationwide cold snap isn’t just making Americans uncomfortable. It’s turning some into lawbreakers.

The shocking news of state and local regulations that make it illegal to warm up your frozen car is hitting home in Texas, Maryland, Ohio, West Virginia, Colorado, Wisconsin, South Carolina – even some cities in Minnesota.

Who knew it could be illegal to run back inside while your car is warming up in winter – in a practice sometimes called “puffing”?

Many Americans are getting first-hand experience this brutal winter with the latest manifestation of what some call the “Nanny State.”

The reason for such laws is usually linked with the increased threat of vehicles being stolen – and some of them carry hefty fines for enticing car thieves to commit their crimes. The laws are a little fuzzy on the newer technology of “auto-start” vehicles specifically designed for the comfort of their drivers and passengers.

Or being white is enticing blacks to do the knockout game.

"Hold on...can we fine people for being white?"

First time I saw a car with this technology was in 1971 in Illinois. The car was from Minnesota.

IIRC, I've seen DYI project on remote starters for cars in electronics magazines as well as amateur radio literature as far back as the 1970's.

Stupid, stupid law based on nothing but sheer control. I have always warmed up the car first in the Winter. When the kids were babies.. I didn’t want to put them into a cold car. Now... I don’t want to get into a cold car and sit till it warms up. You know how cold it was here last week, TSR. I warmed the car up at least 15 minutes in the morning.

So it is illegal to take measures for your health, safety and engine shock?

Thanks liberals.

“Hold on...can we fine people for being white?”

Actually...if you think about it, effectively, this already exists. It does catch some people of other ethnicities/races, though.

I guess a lot of us are criminals now. I have no intention of stopping either. First, the car feels like it runs better when it is warm. Secondly, I feel better when it is warm. I feel like such a gangsta’! LOL!

I think I just figured out why that women was trying to charcoal-thaw her car last week: she was trying to stay out of jail.

No, but Juan Roberts (Traitor in Chief) has ruled you can tax them for it.

We have it here in Jersey. I basically ignore the law. My town is virtually crime-free and if need to run back into the house while the car is running, so be it.

I find I'm happier when I don't assume I'm supposed to do what stupid people tell me to do.
