A Pennsylvania man is recovering after he was stung by a scorpion that hitched a ride on a shipment of Chiquita Bananas imported from Honduras.

Giant spokesman Chris Brand told NBC10 that a worker at the Giant food store in Havertown, Pennsylvania was unloading bananas when he was stung by the scorpion.

Brand wrote in a statement that the company regrets the incident and has taken immediate steps to prevent it from happening again. The unidentified worker was treated and released from Delaware County Memorial Hospital. The worker is doing “okay” though he’s still experiencing pain in his hand, according to Brand.

I was in Texas in tents with some guys. One woke up, sat up, and put his hand on the ground. Scorpion nailed him. He yanked the hand up and shifted his weight to the other hand. You can probably guess what happened!

Here in AZ we see lots of’em. Woke up with one on my chest once. One of us died. the other came close to a bout of sudden onset explosive diarrhea ;)

It really depends on what kind you have the misfortune of being nailed by. Some aren’t too evil. Some are quite evil.

My wife was washing a bunch of Chiquita bananas and called me to the sink, “Is this a spider? It is! Is it a Black Widow?”

It was. Very large one. We have them all around here, almost always in dark places.

This one hitched a long ride from somewhere. Pair of needle-nose pliers dispatched it quickly........

When my son was in 9th grade, he bought this HUGE black scorpion and put him in a tank. He fed it pink mice (like newborn mice). He said it wasn’t very poisonous, he said the little ones were the worst).

Thing died after a few months, and mom was glad.

My late mom told the story of a large, nasty spider that arrived in a box of bananas at the little Jack Spratt Grocery store in Mystic, Iowa in 1939.

Mom's brother Max stunned it with a fly swatter, long enough to retrieve a small bird cage, suitable to keep the bug alive.

Max would chuck a cricket or small dollop of beef to the spider once or twice a month, and it grew quite large, having nothing to do but act as a guard over the lettuce and tomatoes.

The meat cutting business attracted customers from southern Iowa and even North Missouri; large steak orders for picnics were commonplace. Customers nearly always wanted to see the spider.

The spider died after two years of captivity in tiny Mystic. By then it was 1941, and young men from Mystic confronted a new challenge.
