Pinellas County Republicans have until 7 p.m. today to weigh in on the contentious Congressional District 13 special election primary, though thousands already have done so.
The three candidates are commercial airline pilot and retired Marine Reserve Brig. Gen. Mark Bircher, former lobbyist and counsel to U.S. Rep. C.W. Bill Young, David Jolly, and State Rep. Kathleen Peters, a former mayor of South Pasadena.
The winner will face Democrat Alex Sink and Libertarian Lucas Overby on March 11. The special election is to replace Young, a Republican who died unexpectedly last fall after 43 years in the U.S. House. The election has garnered national attention, with media outlets such as The New York Times, Fox News, CNN and The Washington Post keeping tabs, and national Republicans and Democrats weighing in with both money and political attacks.

This is a Florida Ping. The St. Petersburg area should be watching this.
I have never heard of any of the names mentioned before today. Can some election junkies fill us in?
A ‘Bircher’ would be nice.
I see where they have a Libertarian in there to suck off votes from the eventual Republican nominee and help the democrat win the General election Shades of the Virginia Governors race in which the Libertarian was financed by Obama/Democrat bundlers. Wonder how many of these will pop up in the November 2014 races? Republicans better wake up to this Democrat funded tactic.
Jolly is more or less GOPe. Bircher is a military vet and the “most believable” conservative. The woman (forgive me I forget her name) is a former state Congresswoman, I believe, but her record is somewhat dubious. There were some religious organizations deriding her for votes on abortion issues.
If I were voting, I’d pull the lever for Bircher, personally.
Bircher? Sounds good to me!

Democrats are smarter then us or at least know how to play the game. We are too nice and stupid.
I didn’t realize that The Widow Sink is running. She’ll be difficult to beat as she has name recognition and a campaign support mechanism in place from her previous election attempts. Looks like she’s trying to weasel her way into DC now. Look out for the Washerwoman campaigning for her.
David Jolly = GOPe, former aide to Young
Mark Bircher = former military vet, Tea Party conservative
Kathleen Peters = former mayor of Pasadena and 30 years in area politics

Initial turnout appears high for District 13 special primary
Minor quibble: there is no such thing as a former veteran.
Once a veteran, for always.
Bircher is a former Marine, true.
Ex-veteran, as I understood it, was insulting. “Former” means that you once served in the military but are now retired. Perhaps “retired veteran” would’ve been more appropriate?
Yeah, that makes sense, and you’re right: to call one of us an “ex-” is a perjorative, where you earn your douchebaggery...
You should also add that Bircher is endorsed by Allen West!
I’ve heard the man speak. He’s got conviction, and he doesn’t come across as slimy. I really pray he wins. We need a representative like him in Florida.
