A vast majority of top congressional aides say in a new survey that they are concerned about the effects of Obamacare on their staff, ticking off worries about changes to their benefits, higher costs and whether theyll have access to local health care providers.
Ninety percent of staffers surveyed for a report released Monday by the Congressional Management Foundation said they are concerned about benefit changes under the health care law, while 86 percent are anxious about the financial hit and 79 percent cited worries to access.
Only about 35 percent of staffers said they have a good understanding of the changes to their health care plan under Obamacare, according to the survey. Under the health care law, all members of Congress and most congressional aides were required to enroll in the exchanges instead of staying on their federal health care plan.
The elimination of staffs traditional health care has been a complete disaster, one aide said in the survey. If you wanted a legislative branch run by K Street lobbyists and 25-year-old staffers, mission accomplished.
Another staffer in the survey was diagnosed with breast cancer in September and was hit with changes in health care coverage in the middle of radiation treatments, according to the report.
Getting insured through the D.C. exchange is not helpful my choices are very limited and costs are high, the staffer said. As a result, Ive gone on my husbands plan. My staff dont necessarily have that option.
Of the 163 aides who participated in the survey which included House and Senate chiefs of staff, House district directors and Senate state directors 79 percent said it was likely that the health care changes could contribute to staff exits. Fifty-two percent of those who responded worked in a Democratic office, while 48 percent were from GOP offices. The response rate for the survey was 15 percent.
When you freeze salaries, eliminate bonuses and change their health care benefits, its folly to think that its not going to have an impact on the workforce, said Bradford Fitch, the president and CEO of the Congressional Management Foundation.
Unless they work in a leadership or committee office, congressional staffers must enroll in the Obamacare exchange. But some offices voluntarily left their federal health benefits program. An example is House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), who required all of her aides to enroll under Obamacare although her leadership aides could have kept their existing plans.
The matter of Obamacare benefits for lawmakers and staff has been a political football on Capitol Hill, particularly as Sen. David Vitter (R-La.) loudly pressed for months to get rid of those generous contributions.
And the issue is going to court Sen. Ron Johnson (R-Wis.) is now suing the Office of Personnel Management over its decision to allow the federal government to continue providing contributions to health care plans for lawmakers and aides.
The move by some members to eliminate the employer contribution has also not been well-received, one staffer said in the Congressional Management Foundation survey. Everyone felt as if we were pawns in this political argument.
Quit and do what?
This is the same Congressional staff that Obama gave an exemption to. I guess this exemption wasn’t good enough. How well do these staffers “skills” translate into success in the dreaded private sector aka the real world??? lol lol
They should quit and find out
Quit and do what? >>>>>>>
First thing that occurred to me too.
Live in mothers basement?? Flip burgers at a place worse than Burger King?
Live with it. We have to..................or are your pigs more equal than us?................
Quit and do what? >>>>>>>
Be a Internet celebrity.................
So.
Don't kid yourself. These are folks with direct access to DC power and they will be welcomed at lobbying outfits, law firms, hedge funds, etc.
Half of the staffers were cheering loudly about passing the the new ACA when not making fun of Republicans. You said they wanted people to die from lack of health care.
Maybe the mob is hiring....
The good news is that the multitude of problems that will hit everyone eventually are evident more quickly to lawmakers, because their staff will complain directly to them.
The bad news??? The only way they will remedy this is to fix it for themselves and their elite staff
Starbucks?
“Quit and do what?”
Bwhahaha. Welcome to our world. They wouldn’t last a day.
Not at all unusual for people to go to DC to work for a few years to get their tickets punched.
But then they leave.
We're talking the career Washington drones, who outnumber the power players. The few times I've needed to contact my elected representatives, their staff members have been worthless. They often barely speak English. I wouldn't hire these people to mow my lawn. I'm certain no lobbying firm or hedge fund is going to hire them, either.
Let ‘em quit. We’d all be better off for it.
They don’t have to quit and find out, and don’t feel sorry for them. As someone who had forty odd years in Washington I can assure you that they will not be hungry.
Exactly. The low end of departing Hill staffers’ salaries as they enter the wonderful world of lobbying is more than the Representatives/Senators they worked for.
And these staffers warn us about a potential “brain drain” from their departures? >>>>>>>>>>
That senile old nanny stater Nancy Pelosi came out with the “brain drain” comments. That Congress Critters would lose their brainiac staffers if the staffers didn’t get an 0Kare exemption. And they got one one day when Obungu the jug eared personally trod up to Capitol Hill and ordered that it be done by the>>>> Office of Personnel Management
(from internet)
So the in August Office of Personnel Management proposed a rule that would continue the existing payment scheme. In other words, lawmakers and their staffs would keep getting the same subsidy as before, while having to shop for their own coverage.
Welcome to the Party, Pal! One big difference. Most of America's working stiffs wages weren't froze. They were AXED! Next up, Mandatory NeroCare will Huge Co-pays and Deductables. Cry me a River.
You sleep with the sluts, you break out with Herpies!
