SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - Intel Corp (INTC), hit by slumping personal computer sales, has put off opening a major chip factory that President Barack Obama once held up as an example of U.S. manufacturing potential.

The "Fab 42" facility built in Chandler, Arizona, originally slated as a $5 billion project that in late 2013 would start producing Intel's most advanced chips, will remain closed for the foreseeable future while other factories at the same site are upgraded, said Intel spokesman Chuck Mulloy.

Intel's decision not open the chip plant was first reported by the Arizona Republic on Tuesday.

“Internal guidelines say I can make comments about obsolete product ... “

Can you talk about products you are working on that will be obsolete in the future? ;-)

I hear Intel is a great place to work. I passed up an opportunity to work there back in 1998. While I have no regrets, those six month sabbaticals every 10 years would work wonders when it comes to cleansing the mind from various chip design related nightmares that accumulate over the course of a decade (I mainly do FPGA work, but it has its various related stresses ... nothing like taping out a new ASIC though :-) ).

I can tell. The market for kewl electronic gadgets is going down the crapper. I work for a large competitor, also in Chandler AZ. We hauled anchor and have been steering to the non-consumer electronics market for years. (No, I’m not telling who I work for.)

The cost of the lowest Labor Participation Rate since Carter is taking its toll. People can’t buy s***.

Intel is a good company. I’ve known that for a fact for a long time.

Trust me its nothing sinister, just a business decision.

I'd make book on that. You are absolutely right. It's just business.

You don’t know what you’re talking about. This isn’t anonymous.

Intel isn’t the same it was back in the ‘90s but no company is.
Last public processor I worked on was “Haswell”.
I really like how we did the power distribution.

Sabbaticals are 2 months every 7 years but you can add your vacation time onto it.
Intel is one of the few Silicon Valley companies which still offer sabbaticals.
