What a bizarre spectacle. Assuming he did not lie during his marathon news conference last week, the feeding frenzy surrounding New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie will be remembered as one of those incredibly odd moments of elite journalistic hysteria that are difficult to explain to people who weren't there or didn't get it.
I'm not referring to the scandal itself; that's easy enough to understand. What Christie's team did was outrageous and deserves as much foofaraw and brouhaha as the New Jersey media can muster.
What's harder to grok is the hysteria at the national level.
For starters, there have been countless greater outrages at the state level that have received far less national coverage (indeed, there have been national scandals under President Obama that have received less intense national coverage). Since 1961, four Illinois governors have ended up in jail, and with the exception of Rod Blagojevich, few have received comparable media attention.
"Meet the Press" dedicated 33 minutes to the New Jersey scandal, including a grilling of Reince Priebus, head of the Republican National Committee, as if Christie were Nixon during Watergate (a comparison ostensibly serious people have made).
<snip>
That probably explains the overkill as much as anything. Christie is new, exciting and interesting in ways Obama once was. The difference is that when Obama was new and exciting, the media were biased in every regard and heroically skeptical of any Obama wrongdoing. "We thought he was going to be the next messiah," Barbara Walters recently said. The ardor has diminished but the skepticism remains.
Christie, like most Republicans, never benefited from such skepticism, and never will.

The MSM trying to show that they are still in charge of American politics.
What it is... is this......The Leftists want desperately to talk about anything except Obamacare, the economy and the deteriorating American position in the world.
This just shows how out of touch and out of ideas (except bad ones) they truly are.
Who outside NJ really cares about some closed lane on some highway in that state? Highways here in KS are routinely closed for “repairs” during harvest, just when the roads are crammed with heavy machinery and trucks. Nobody ever demanded the Governor’s head. (although maybe they should)
“We thought he was going to be the next messiah,”
Walters has a thing for handsome black guys - even if there is nothing inside their head.
Somebody should point out to her the world only gets ONE Messiah in a lifetime and His name wasn’t “Hussein Obama”
Isn’t there a Senator from New Jersey who travels to the Caribbean to have sex with minors? I guess that’s not as big a deal as traffic problems in New Jersey.
The press realized they made a mistake and took out a hideous Rino, so they are backtracking.
Christie is not my choice and I will not vote for him......but at least he has accepted responsibility and taken corrective action to prevent reocurrence. This shows that he is at least an able executive and thus light years ahead of any rat out there.
“Who outside NJ really cares about some closed lane on some highway in that state?”
Even worse: who cares about closed ENTRANCE LANES to a highway? The closings were not on the highway itself (which connects NYC to California).
Christie will survive this just fine; his popularity ratings in NJ remain high because people don;t believe he was guilty of anything personally, and unlike the Communists “fundamentally transforming” this country they got to see some justice in the firings of people who were guilty.
