RICHMOND - Gov. Terry McAuliffe's transportation chief says work has been suspended on a new toll road that would run parallel to U.S. Route 460 from Suffolk to Petersburg.

Secretary of Transportation Aubrey Layne told the House Transportation Committee on Tuesday that no more money will be spent on the $1.4 billion, 55-mile highway until the state receives a permit from the Army Corps of Engineers. The project "should have been vetted a couple of years ago," Layne said. "There will be no more money spent on 460 until the permitting process is complete."

Even then, McAuliffe has said he plans to take a hard look to make sure the project is the best use of state dollars.

That didn't take long. Two days after McAuliffe takes office he has his transportation chief suspend planning for an upgraded connector between the Ports around Norfolk and the distribution centers around Richmond.

Did the Mayor of Petersburg not endorse him?

Is this an immediate difference to the environmental left or the prelude to pay to play perhaps?

All the $$ is in northern VA; that’s where he will spend our tax dollars. I’d be surprised if this carpetbagger doesn’t start a high-speed rail line running from Richmond to DC.

"There will be no more money spent on 460 until the permitting process is complete."

Or until I can figure out how to skim the dollars off the top..................

“Virginia voters are discovering their new guv.”

We can thank the RNC and e-GOP for this nightmare.

If this halt causes traffic buildups, especially jams leading to deaths... we will never hear about it.

But he’s already promising to push bills which will make Virginia more “gay friendly”, including queer marriage.

Bastard.

Kind of odd, because the project is at least partly a federal highway project.

Federal Highway Administration - Route 460 improvements

You'd think the feds would have done their homework.

And if you want to know why Terri would attack a transportation project, threatening to get democrats labelled anti-transportation, you have to look no further than this web site:

Southern Environmental Law Center: 460, a 1.4 billion dollar boondoggle
