Thursday's edition of the Federal Register contains 185 new agency submissions, including an update to the cost of the National School Lunch Program.
Nutrition: The price tag on Michelle Obama's National School Lunch Program was inaccurately reported in the Federal Register earlier this month, so the Food and Nutrition Service at the U.S. Department of Agriculture is correcting the cost.
The National School Lunch Program and School Breakfast Program, which provides free and low-cost healthy meals to more than 31 million students, are now projected to cost taxpayers $16.4 billion for 7.8 billion million students in 2014. The costs will continue to grow over the next couple years, according to government estimates, adding up to $17 billion by 2016.
In 2013, the costs totaled $15.9 billion.
Schools that participate in the lunch and breakfast programs receive a 6-cent reimbursement for each meal they serve to students, as well as food from the Agriculture Department to make sure it complies with the requirements.
The lunch and breakfast programs that Michelle Obama pushed for were authorized by Congress under the Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010.
Archaeology: The U.S. Treasury Department and Customs and Border Protection are teaming up to ban certain archaeological materials from Bulgaria.
The two agencies issued a joint final rule adding Bulgaria to a list of countries that the United Nations has designated. Now, Bulgarian artifacts from the Middle Ages will be protected from export to the United States.
The rule goes into effect Tuesday.
Workplace safety: The Department of Health and Human Services is looking to update rules for workplace safety and health investigations. The proposal would update outdated terminology from the HHS's regulations.

It gets worse. Their families are able to take advantage of these meals and many schools keep the program going 12 months a year. So with this, food stamps, WIC and food banks we’re paying 3 to 5 times for the same individuals.

The US compulsory education system is remarkably similar to how Obamacare will be in many ways. Forced funding through broad taxation, a culture of entitlement and infalibility of “the system”, special perks and waivers for favored groups, and a massive entrenched beaurocracy. The above article could be rewritten substituting “school” for “healh coverage” with the appropriate grammatical changes, the entire article dated a few decades into the future, and it would be pretty accurate of things to come.
31MM students on the program, out of 49MM public school students = 63% of students?
How are 63% of public school students “underprivileged” enough to require subsidized meals?
And yet, we can’t even devote a cent to bringing mandatory prayer back. Real food.
How will not extending long term unemployment insurance affect the number of children eligible for free or reduced price lunches.

Also scary is that schools pull a lot of stunts to get kids on school lunch program...
Why?
Because federal money for schools is based on how many kids are on school lunch program
