JC Penney to shed 33 stores, cut 2,000 jobs

NEW YORK – J.C. Penney Co. said on Wednesday it would close 33 stores and cut 2,000 jobs as part of its efforts to return to profitability.

Chief Executive Myron Ullman said in a statement the action "addresses a strategic priority to improve the profitability of our stores."

Penney is the second major U.S. retailer in as many weeks to announce layoffs. Last week, Macy's Inc said it was eliminating 2,500 jobs. Those cuts will be offset over time as the retailer plans to add positions to its online business, leaving overall staffing levels unchanged at around 175,000.

They are bleeding cash in the dying market of low end mall retailers. They are not long for this world.

You are right but don’t tell people here. They are obsessed with the gay ad storyline. Not one single analyst on the Street has mentioned the ad campaign. The JCP story is about Ron Johnson.

Guess that income inequality thing is working pretty well. Marxism has failed everywhere it has been tried.

The reason JCP fell on hard times is it allowed a CEO to trash the hard earned lessons of retailing. He played fruit basket turnover and the basket never righted its self.

The reason JCP fell is because it went fruity. I know lots of people who no longer shop at JCP and almost every one of them avoids it because it is a fag store. JCP turned it's back on Christian families and we found better places to shop.

The damage was not from the political ellen decision but from plain old bad business.

And the worst of those decisions (I'll admit there were many bad decisions made) was spitting on 97% of the population just to lust after the remaining 3%

JCP went gay and Americans want nothing to do with that.

One of the stores being cut is in my area.

The prices are high, and so is the rent I assume. I am honestly surprised that the two other stores near me are still open.

I know. But it was ridiculous to think that someone who represents 3% or less of the population is some kind of cultural leader. I don’t care about Ellen, her life, whatever, but I am sick to death of having a hostile culture forced on me.

They renovated the two JCP stores I used to go in, they are awful. Less merchandise and choice of products. Silly to think that was ever going to work out as a business plan. I do not even walk in the door to browse. Why bother? I shop at Macy’s, Kohl’s, Bon Ton and Target all regularly.

This is something that I think has been inevitable for a long time. I’m thankful I have a roof over my head, I know that much. I wonder how long this will realistically last.

It’s sad; malls used to be fun places and you could enjoy yourself while running shopping errands. Now thanks to the denizens of the dysfunctional underclass we can’t even enjoy this anymore.

But their heart was one of 'ellen' and 'obama'. Doing things the wrong way is not the way to success. It drags one down as it is our country. Evil knows no bounds - the answer to 'how low can you go'.

I see what you're saying, but I just don't think the downfall of JC Penney has much, if anything, to do with evil, or with the company's "heart." It's just simple business. It was never going to be easy - like many mid-range department stores, they've been squeezed by high-end and more affordable competitors (both brick-and-mortar and internet). The problem is, JCP seemingly responded by slashing the quality of their merchandise.

All the stunts they've pulled over the past few years (the "gay" stuff, but also their "no sales" thing, and their recent attempts to sell "flashier"--but still terrible quality--merchandisa) was a last-gasp effort to find some market, some niche, someone to buy their merchandise. The efforts obviously failed, and may have helped speed the collapse along (by alienating what was left of their customer base), but the writing was on the wall well before JCP started the nonsense.

When Penneys went homosexual I went straight for any store but them. I don’t plan on going back no matter. They have shown me their bottom price and I am not buying.

“It’s sad; malls used to be fun places and you could enjoy yourself while running shopping errands. Now thanks to the denizens of the dysfunctional underclass we can’t even enjoy this anymore.”

You’re right; I’m in my early forties, and they reached their heyday in the 80s (when jobs were plentiful for adults and teens alike). Those days, and that economy, are long gone. I rarely go to malls anymore, and when I do I’m shocked at how many foreigners there and how few people are buying anything. Seems to be cell phone stores, food courts, and tattoo parlors now...

It’s very easy to see the problem, unless you are blind to what real Americans think.

JCPenney did the mortal sin of retail. They spit in the face of their customer base.

Faggotry is not accepted and never will be by the vast majority of people. JCP went gay and we now stay away. I’ve discussed this on web sites with hundreds of people over the years and the answer is always the same. While other factors may contribute, the real reason people don’t shop there any more is that Christians avoid gay stores and JCP went gay.

We’re not homo-phobic. We’re homo-disgusted and don’t want our children exposed to perversion

And never go to a mall in a big city (unless you are heavily armed). It’s just not worth the risk

Pretty much; at this one mall the bookstores are gone, the outlets are selling generic, uninteresting things, and there was a shooting at this one mall I liked going to.

This mall buses in people from the ghetto, explains everything.

I’m ticked that a lot of great malls are becoming nothing but babysitting services for the younger kids and troublemakers. Used to be a nice place, used to be fun to go to, but now it’s just a depressing, darkening place.

Pity since I liked to park my car at the book store, read there, sometimes buy a magazine and then make the trek to the mall and go to one of the restaurants.
