Sybrina Fulton, who's 17-year-old son Trayvon Martin was shot by neighborhood watchman George Zimmerman in 2012, visited the University of Utah on Thursday to discuss racial profiling. Hundreds attended the Martin Luther King Week event, in which Fulton said that an "upside" to her son's death was the "opportunity to save someone else's child."
"Don’t think for one second racial profiling doesn’t happen. Don’t think for one minute even in your community of Salt Lake City it doesn’t happen," she said. "Racism is still alive. Racial profiling is still alive. Injustice is still alive."
Fulton said that the circumstances of her son's death -- he was wearing a hoodie when Zimmerman shot him -- applied all over the country.
"There should not become a time when we are comfortable with burying our children," Fulton said. "What happened many miles away in Sanford should be uncomfortable for you."
"Is it the hoodie that really made the difference? Or the color of his skin?" she asked. "And if by one second, just by one mere second, we think that it's the color of his skin, then something is wrong with America."
""At the end of the day, it’s not about Trayvon. It’s about the person that felt he was suspicious," she added.
Zimmerman, who was acquitted last year, said he was acting in self-defense when he shot Martin. He recently faced domestic violence charges when his current girlfriend said he had threatened her with a gun and choked her. The Florida state attorney's office decided to drop those charges on her request.

She’s right. It does happen. For a reason.

Did Trayvon profile Zimmerman as a white man?
In this statement, as in most else she said, she was wrong. There is no upside for a human death, even in self-defense it is a tragedy. Not that Tayvon didn't probably have it coming.
But this is like saying the upside of a tornado wiping out a town is the big boom in construction. The property (not to mention lives) are still destroyed. The weallth used for reconstruction could have been used for something else. It is all downside.
As for racial profiling, this used to be known as common sense. Sterotypes are stereotypes for a reason, and while we should all be open to changing our minds as we get to know individuals better, in a tense situation you go with statistics

She is right. As long as we have this admin in power and people like her they will always profile whitey.
I don’t question whether racial profiling happens. Everybody racially profiles. The important question is, or at least should be, “Is racial profiling justified?”
If you ask people of any race if they are distrustful of people from any race, one race in particular stands out.
White people are generally distrustful of many black people.
Asian people are generally distrustful of many black people.
Hispanic people are generally distrustful of many black people.
Native American people are generally distrustful of many black people.
And last but not least, many black people are generally distrustful of many black people.
Add this up, and logic supports the idea that there is a *legitimate* reason for this distrust. So if there is a legitimate reason, why pretend there is not?
Uh, profiling - yes, even racial - is one of the most valuable tools used by law enforcement. Of course it is happening. It should.
You think they don’t racially profile when they see a car full of white teenagers cruising a black ghetto?
She is correct - racial profiling is something that we all do - everyday. Primarily, it’s necessary to avoid trouble.
And it should.
