Mayor Ed Lee thinks he has a solution to slow the accelerating problem of homeowners being priced out of San Francisco and the Bay Area - build new housing at perhaps the fastest rate in the city's history.
That's the centerpiece of Lee's annual state of the city address, to be delivered Friday. He will call for 30,000 homes to be built or rehabilitated over the next six years, with more than half being affordable to low- and middle-income residents making up to $145,650 for a family of four.

Having been to SF on several occasions I always find that the housing looks a tad bit run down for the extreme price being charged.
They don’t need cheaper housing. They can continue to use BART to import low wage workers.
Or he could send all his “undesirable” peoples to Detroit (virtually free housing).
“Having been to SF on several occasions I always find that the housing looks a tad bit run down for the extreme price being charged.”
You just haven’t been to Nancy’s and Diane’s neighborhood. Good luck to Lee, the city is building a lot of housing currently ( Webcor is building another tower right next to One Rincon, and the area between the Bay Bridge and India Basin is building high-priced housing after tearing down all the “public housing” on Potrero Hill). The residential real estate market is booming, but not for the $145k families. Blacks are being run out of town, and the Asian Community is flourishing out in “The Avenues.” Even Google runs a private ferry from SF to it’s HQ down on the Peninsula. SF will soon be a city for the wealthy only, but will continue to be a $hit hole!
Cost of living in the Bay Area is atrocious... petrol is above 4.50 a gallon, food is way more expensive than other places, and housing is ridiculous. in SF for example a studio with 450 square feet of living space goes for 1200 to 1400 per month.
There is almost no where in the Bay Area where you can currently buy a house making that kind of money UNLESS you already have a down payment squirreled away. If you want a 2 hour commute you can find housing for less.
If you already have a house and a mortgage you are good to go.
GAAAH! Does anyone see a "problem" with a family of four making that kind of money being considered "low-middle income"?
I'm a physician and I make less than that.
So apparently I'm not even poor enough to be considered "low-income" in SF.
By this definition, I'm homeless.
$145,650?
Isn’t that a top 5% kind of income?
Private companies would be more than happy to build 30,000 units if they were freed to do so. Government need not be involved, because it is usually the problem
“Does anyone see a “problem” with a family of four making that kind of money being considered “low-middle income”?”
It’s all a part of the plan...
1) it creates class envy, because now you know you are “poor”..didn’t you KNOW that you ARE poor compared to all the EEEEVILLL rich people in the world
2) it creates dependency because you will now receive government benefits to supplement your sad income. Didn’t you know you couldn’t exist without the help of the government?!
what is going to be demolished to create the SPACE to build even a third of those homes??
San Francisco is on a Peninsula and there is no space for Municipal expansion...nor much empty space available
I think lees been hitting the crack pipe.
Oh Golden Gate Park? thirty thousand homes? uh huh
one real strong shaker and the SF real estate outlook usually turns downward...
