Call it Melissa Harris-Perry's "corpse-man" moment . . .
In a segment on the role of the US military during her MSNBC show this morning, Harris-Perry, quoting the Marine Corps motto, pronounced it Semper "Fee." Marines of course pronounce it "fye." Perry surely meant no disrespect. But it is a mark of how detached she and so much of the liberal media is from military culture that she could make such a mistake.

And to think she almost got tenure at Princeton.
Better to keep your mouth shut than to advertise your low IQ.
Maybe it’s just me, but I was shocked at how many posts in here DID NOT know it is phonetically “fye”...
I just assumed everyone had heard “Semper Fidelis” many many times....
Even the Coast Guard...”Semper Paratus”.....
Eh desty fie dealies,
Lee tie try 'em fan tease,
Ven night tie, Ven night tie,
in Beth-lee-hem.
I don't know who these singers were but it's intrigued me ever since.
If anyone can direct me toward recordings of this nature, I would be very grateful!
I am beginning to find that when a woman wears glasses with big ugly black frames, it’s a message that says, “I’m a leftist,” and “I don’t care if this is ugly, I’m so confident that the right sort of lefty man will find me attractive even if I’m deliberately making myself ugly.”
Tell her it rhymes with the MSNBC motto: Semper Lie.
Oh, to think some brave Leatherneck stands ready to take a bullet for this moron...
oh yes! my sons sang this for our family on Christmas Even maybe 5 or 6 years ago... we do the Ecclesiastical pronunciation... it is silly but my reason for choosing Ecclesiastical over Classical is i just could not go with Weni Widi Wici over Veni Vidi Vici...
She’s no more illiterate than our president.
Re: “Semper Fifi” and pic of Al Gore.
That is hilarious! I literally laughed out loud when I saw it. Thanks for the best laugh of the last couple days.
It's short--check any classical Latin dictionary--e.g. Cassell's. But even in classical pronunciation I suspect this short/truncated form would be pronounced long "fee" , not short "fih", in spite of the otherwise short quantity of the vowel for the complete word.
And "semper" would not be pronounced "sim-pr", but rather "sem-pr"--there is a difference.
But none of this is Latin per se, but a modern slogan "sim-pr-figh."
and on another note, Shakespeare has many, many spelling variations, and among many offerings, authored Much Ado About Nothing in 1598
Simple-ton
I prefer Semper Fired
Just to put things in perspective, I bet this idiot earns much more than 99% of the people who Post on this site.
Another War on Women, not.
In my work I’m always quite careful to use Latin binomials when referring to the various species I utilize or encounter, and always delight at the response to the properly pronounced binomen for shore pine.
Ha Ha. Great reply.
Even someone with the the most rudimentary passing knowledge of the Marines would know how to pronounce ‘Fi’.
So, from this I can surmise -
She doesn’t know anyone in the US Marines.
She’s never known anyone in the US Marines.
No one in her family has ever been a US Marine.
No one in her friends’ families is in the US Marines.
She’s never spent five minutes speaking with a US Marine.
She’s never seen a US Marines commercial on tv.
She’s never seen anyone wearing a US Marines t-shirt.
She’s never seen anyone with a US Marines tattoo.
She’s never seen a US Marines bumper sticker or license plate.
In short, the US Marines do not exist in her world.
Fee, Fye, Pho, Fum ...
Harris-Perry’s really dumb.
Add to your list: She’s never watched a movie in which actors portray US Marines.
Then repeat the litany for US Navy, US Army, US Air Force, and US Coast Guard ...
Yes, I think her ignorance really does run that deep.
“In short, the US Marines do not exist in her world.”
Nailed it. Uncontested dunk.
