Top Hill lawmakers concerned about Olympic security, amid new terror threats and attacks

Top Capitol Hill lawmakers on Sunday expressed concerns about terror attacks at the upcoming Olympic games in Sochi, Russia, amid nearby terror attacks and Russian President Vladimir Putin’s assurances that his country will “do whatever it takes” to protect athletes and visitors.

“The threats are real,” Texas GOP Rep. Mike McCaul, chairman of the House Homeland Security Committee, told ABC’s “This Week.”

McCaul is among those who think an attack during the games next month will most likely occur outside of the Olympic city and that terrorists will go after “soft targets” such as roads and transportation systems.

McCaul, who is in Moscow this weekend, declined to directly answer the question of whether he would tell Americans they would be safe to travel to the games, saying only that he will “do everything I can” to make sure the games are safe for everybody, including the estimated 15,000 Americans who will attend.

His comments were preceded on the show by an interview with Putin, who said the job of the Olympic host is to provide security and “we will do whatever it takes.”

The concerns follow a string of threats and apparent terror attacks in Russia.

On Sunday, in a new video that was posted on a Chechen extremist site, two militants vowed that tourists and Russians attending the games would not be safe.

Putin's watching. He was watching when the Boston Bombers were on the move....and he warned us. Obama blew him off.

An incident in Russia...I'd say it's almost wishful thinking on Obama's part.

I agree and am not surprised Putin and the Russians are not sharing a lot of intelligence with this administration.

The American “will do everything I can”
The Russian “will do whatever it takes”
There is a world of difference between those 2 answers and I really like the second one a lot better than the first.

Amen to that, there’s a huge difference!

I also believe the Russians “will do whatever it takes.”

Agreed. Stating concern over a host nation’s security over such matters, especially from a country that blew them off when they tried to warn us about Boston, is a massive sleight in my eyes. Let the Russians handle this, because they have the ability to do so, and the will to go after people if they have to. Next time we have games here I would fully expect Putin to question security here, and cite the Boston incident.

If people on the hill are so worried about security, don’t. Just play the “I was unaware game” that some people I can name are so fond of.

I can only imagine the security that will be needed for the Super Bowl.

Just imagine how much harder security is when they are prohibited by Holder from looking at a Muslim any differently than anyone else.

Surprised the Putin Haters haven’t taken over this thread...

I wouldn’t be surprised some of the Homeland Security types in this country are really afraid the Russians will kill a lot of Islamic Terrorists...and put the US on the spot for being pro Islamic Terrorist.

This is probably going to get me some alphabet visits, but I need to tell it.

Back in .. 07? I had a dream where I was driving along a freeway (which I think was I-45 through Houston) and all of a sudden I started seeing bodies on either side of the road, and in the road, first one and two, then five, then twenty, then hundreds. All just lying on the ground off the road. I turned around when (in the dream) the carnage became too much to deal with, even though people were waving at me to keep coming and help.

The next morning, I told this dream to a convenience store owner, still puzzling over how all these people were just dead on the ground alongside the freeway. A week later, plots were broken up that were to blow apart aircraft in mid-air, and I suddenly understood why I had this dream. I couldn’t figure out *what* happened, only I witnessed the result of what thankfully did not happen. I’ve had a couple other dreams like this, but none.. verified.

The other night, my dream was I was on a flight, and the pilot started to fly some loopy stuff, coming too close to buildings, some rolls, and the passengers were freaking out.
I was trying to assure them that this craft is going to land, and you are going to walk off it, but they did their panic thing until the craft actually did land. I KNEW in the dream it would land safely, and the passengers deboarded as soon as it did.

This is where it seems the craft was a 787, as I was heading *down* to talk to the pilot about why did he feel the need to scare all these (hundreds, it seems, in the dream), and when I got down to the flight deck, there were about 35 mangled and bloody passengers in business suits...dead... but there were alive women crouching among the victims. They were dressed in black.

I had to hide because some people were boarding the craft and I was trying to learned what happened.

This dream has been bothering me for days and it wasn’t until today I connected it to Sotchi and the Chechnyan Black widows via this article.

This leads me to think all Dreamliners approaching Moscow need extra security.
