If this was 1980 or 1984, he would have been washed out in the primaries if he made it that far. I think in addition to my affirmative action assessment, another thing that helped him and even Clinton was that the Cold War ended and we did not have to stand up to the big, bad Soviets anymore and we feel under the assumption that everything is hunky-dory. It is far from that as 9-11 proved as well as many other things, but we are still asleep as a nation.
