If you look at his statement from the perspective of the academic here is what he says:

Some people hate me because I am black. Some people give me a pass because I am black. This is a logically correct statement.

I can say (from my experience long ago as a young single fellow: Some girls really digged me because I have red hair. Some girls wouldn’t touch me with a 10’ poll because I had red hair. Some girls didn’t care one way or the other.

The statement is logically true.
