There's a strange disease called 'Putin Cough' going around FR these days-- every time Moscow is up to some disreputable action, there are a few dozen freepers coughing up excuses.

I don't get it either... I find all these recent pro-soviet Putinista statements rather strange. To find them on FR to me looks as bewildering as pro-King George III postings.

Quite frankly, yes the EU is better. Having to balance one's budget in return for bailouts is indeed painful (The US can count itself lucky that China out of economic fear continues to buy its debt), but it's preferable to Russian-style cleptocracy, Gulags for dissidents and hordes of thugs silencing any kind of opposition.

The EU, not unlike Washington, is often overregulated, statist and sclerotic. But it offers both greater freedom of expression and economic freedom. To me that seems exactly what proud, hard-working Ukranians want. Just a bit more freedom.

Also from an American standpoint, the pro-Putin propaganda makes no sense. The EU is the very definition of "western civilization", also moderately pro-American and in contrast to China or Russia has hardly any military ambitions on the world stage. Whereas Putin is hellbent on restoring the USSR as a counterweight to the US of A.
