I teach at a major university. Blue books still exist and are excellent for spotting people who don’t do their own work. Additionally, term papers have to be made so specific that the person writing the paper has to be taking the course. Generic, open ended term papers are a thing of the past in my courses.

Just got through a Greek Civ course taught by an Emeritus Professor who used Blue Books. Some of the students didn't know what they were. He's a personal friend as well, and so I was asking him if two weeks was average for grading the things back in the Olden Days. He said no, but that in the Olden Days he could kick them back for poor handwriting.

The number one freshman course at the University where I work is remedial English composition. That is NOT English as a second language. The second most popular freshman course is remedial mathematics. How remedial? Most of us got that stuff in elementary school.
