A Somerville Tree Saga: Redefining Private Property (Barf)

Time out.

This time around, I don't want to talk about airlines, airports or airplanes.

I want to talk about trees.

That's right, trees. Specifically, I want to talk about the decision made by a Somerville neighbor of mine to fell an old, beautiful, and perfectly healthy tree because it was "in the way" of his backyard improvement project -- in the process adversely affecting the quality of life for me and several of my neighbors.

Is it crazy or un-American to suggest that, at a certain point, a tree is no longer one person's private property per se, and belongs to the community? And at that point, should the property owner be restricted as to what he or she may do with said tree?

I first started asking these questions seven or eight years ago...

~snip~

So, ultimately this is a debate about private property. But what is private property?

You hit that one right out of the park.

Yep, he looks like your typical left wing Prairie Fairy.

In my community, you have to have a permit to cut down a tree of a certain size. I am surprised that is not true in Boston?

Yes, it’s crazy, and yes, it’s un-American.

But what is private property?

Ask John Galt.

It is both crazy and un-American. In other words, liberal.

And at that point, should the property owner be restricted as to what he or she may do with said tree?

No. Your neighbor is not responsible for your quality of life. He owes you nothing. NOTHING. You have no right whatsoever to impose your esthetic on him.

Are their roots into your yard too?

Are they feeding off your water?

Hint.

Why don’t you just plant your own trees?

Because he wants the benefit of tress without having to do the work himself.

We lost this battle back in the 1990s when eco-fascists claimed ownership of private property, and fat-ass, stupid conservatives refused to show up at county board and town council meetings to stake their claim to their own property. Conservatives decided back then that making money and remodeling their kitchens was more important than liberty and their families. You reap what you sow...

Prepare for the jackboot on your throats.
