This kind of thing has gotten mayors fired before, sometimes with extreme distrust. Does anybody remember Jane Byrne of Chicago? She got elected in a race against Michael Bilandic, who had been acting mayor after the death of Richard Daley, largely because of a blizzard that hit Chicago just before election, in early 1977. He couldn’t get the streets cleared, and those who could get out to vote, overwhelmingly turned down his bid for a full term.
Jane Byrne defeated Bilandic in the April, 1979 mayoral primary. The snowstorm was in early 1979 and Bilandic’s poor command of Democratic Machine forces was fresh in everybody’s minds.
