A well-known New Orleans musician is hospitalized and unconscious after being jumped in the French Quarter.
Doug Potters family and friends believe he may have been a target of the knockout game.
Always here when we needed him. Really nice man, said Chef Rick Tyler of Cafe Beignet.
Steamboat Willie and his New Orleans Jazz Band entertained music lovers Tuesday night inside the Bourbon Street courtyard venue. The cafe is also where fellow musician Potter plays three times a week.
On Monday night it was suppose to be business as usual.
Its a terrible tragedy. I was the one that let him out the gate last night. I left 10 minutes after he did, so it could have been any of us, Tyler said.
According to witnesses as well as video tape, two individuals just took it upon themselves to assault, and badly hurt him. He fell into the street, said David Potter, the victims brother.
Since the brutal attack the 54-year-old bass player has undergone intensive brain surgery at University Hospital, where family and friends continue to pray for his recovery.
Friends confirm hes now in an induced coma.
Get these people off the street. Ive had it. You live here all your life and you have to deal with something like that, said David Potter.
As Potter remains in intensive care, loved ones are grappling to understand why the musician with such a big heart was the target of such a violent and senseless attack.

The 3 point crown has been adopted by the Latin Kings gang as a gang sign. They also use a 5 point crown as a symbolism. Their gang is run by what is called the Crown Council who dishes out discipline and rules.
If our police & POS Holder won’t stop this, then it looks like the rest of us “targets” will have to do a variation of the “Thatch Weave” fighter pilots created during WW2, 2 people watching each other’s back, if a punk tries the game on one the other will have a clear shot...
Where I live isn’t very pedestrian-friendly, but I still worry about parking lots, etc. I won’t go to the store at night. I carry mace, and that’s all I’m admitting to here. I still worry though, because even if you’re armed, the way the attacks happen, you don’t see it coming to defend yourself. At the grocery store, even in daylight, when loading my car, I try to keep the cart between me and whoever. I’ll shove it into them if they approach me, and I won’t slow down to see if they’re friendly. That may sound drastic, but too bad. As long as this is swept under the rug and no black leaders will call their thugs out for this, as long as this “justice” system allows it to happen and doesn’t call it what it is and prosecute accordingly-ie, a hate crime-I will do what I have to do to protect myself.
Nothing can be taken for granted. One group of blacks who set upon and beat their non-black victims (a large city, I think it was Baltimore but I would need to search for the story) were still wearing their school uniforms when they did it.
In the United States in 2005, 37,460 white females were sexually assaulted or raped by a black man, while between zero and ten black females were sexually assaulted or raped by a white man.
What this means is that every day in the United States, over one hundred white women are raped or sexually assaulted by a black man.
The sad part is I have had numerous discussions on crime with black people at work and they seem to think just the reverse of statistics like these. It is pathetic as far as Im concerned; I realize many people are ignorant or self-deluded. I think a lot of people have been brainwashed in the black community through the media and TV and just pure nonsense in their communities to believe that white people are out to get black people and committing crimes of every sort. Sometimes I will say something but because these people are in the same general office I just accept their point of view and change the topic or walk away. Insane world.
