After first time users get past the embarrassment of using their newly issued EBT cards they’re hooked. And, being that many, perhaps most, users are unemployed and thereby shop during the day they quickly observe that just about everyone else is using the magic card too.

But, we were ‘brought back from the brink’...in fiscal incoherent speak, that works with low information types...

The best way to improve the food stamp program is to make it into block grants to states, with encouragement for them to buy their states’ farmers surplus crops and give it as a bonus to food stamp recipients.

Thus states would determine what food items were allowed as part of the program, likely eliminating junk foods and replacing it with produce.

The best involvement by the feds would be to both make and publish audits of how well states spent their money, so that their citizens could see if it was well managed or not.

The most telling number is the reduction in median household income from 56K to the current 50K.

That’s not a recovery, and being on foodstamps is a symptom of this reduction.

That food processing companies and grocery store chains are noting a resulting increase in sales, and those stats are being chalked-up to a “recovery”.

“Many poor people do not have photo IDs, and it costs money they do not have to get them,”

I know this sounds heartless, but can't they sell a few of their food stamps to cover the cost? /S
