Love and Hate [Excerpt from commentary on the book of Romans]

I believe that the greatest ethical issue today is that of abortion. In recent years many have come to see terrorist as more concerning than abortion.

I am baffled by that, because more people were killed on September 10 in the womb of U.S. women than were killed on 9/11 in New York City. More babies were slaughtered on September 12 than adults were killed on 9/11.

If we had a camera on the womb so that CNN could show us graphic videos of what actually happens in the slaughter of unborn children, abortion would be quickly abolished, but the reality of it covered up. If there is one thing I know about God, it is that he hates abortion.

The German ethicist Helmut Thielicke indicated something unusual in his massive mid-twentieth century work on Christian ethics. The work appeared before "Roe v. Wade"; that is, before Western civilization had embraced abortion on demand.

In his book Thielicke wrote that abortion has always been considered a monolithic evil in Christian thought among both liberals and conservatives. That is clear from the very first century, in the Didache, which called abortion "murder".

Abortion is an unspeakable evil that God abhors, one that the American church tolerates and winks at. That troubles me deeply, and I do not understand it.

This excerpt is from page 422 of the St. Andrew's Expositional Commentary on Romans by R. C. Sproul.

The Didache, if you don't know, is a compilation of early Church teachings...not considered scripture of course, but a good indicator of some of the thinking going on in Christianity at the time.

By the way, the verse being exposited in the point of the commentary is Romans 12:9b “Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good.”

One more thing; Dr. Sproul’s ministry has been playing his video message regarding abortion for FREE this week on his web site. There are FIVE of them, and all can be watched at Ligonier.org

#1 is How Sacred is Human Life?
http://www.ligonier.org/rym/broadcasts/video/how-sacred-human-life-jan-2014/

#2 is What is the Relationship of Church and State?
http://www.ligonier.org/rym/broadcasts/video/what-is-the-relationship-church-state-jan-2014/

#3 is When Does Life Begin?
http://www.ligonier.org/rym/broadcasts/video/when-does-life-begin-jan-2014/

#4 is What About Those Who Demand Their Rights?
http://www.ligonier.org/rym/broadcasts/video/when-does-life-begin-jan-2014/

#5 is What’s Your Verdict?
http://www.ligonier.org/rym/broadcasts/video/whats-your-verdict-jan-2014/

EVEN though most of us are already strongly pro-life here on FR, I urge you to at least look and listen to Dr. Sproul’s teaching...he may give you new ways of looking at the issue and how to persuade others that unborn children deserve protection.

Abortion is rampant because “sex for family” has been deemphasized and “sex for fun” has taken its place. We live in a sex-saturated, pleasure-saturated culture. Contraception has caused people (despite “sex education” in schools) to forget the connection between the sexual act and conception, as a result, a baby is no longer seen as a “blessed event” but an annoying byproduct to be disposed of.

It's one thing to argue against abortion with Godless atheists, but it really gets to me when I find myself having the same argument with people who claim to be Christians. I don't understand it either, Dr. Sproul.

I have the same problem with those who profess to be Born Again Christians and vote Democrat. Particularly when they claim to be Baptists.

Since this thread is specifically about abortion, I'll tag onto your post in this respect. Because of the Democrat Party's official anti-life pro-abortion stance, I vowed long ago never to vote for a Democrat for any office, local/state/federal. I refuse to be complicit with Satan. Even if I weren't in substantial agreement with standard Republican positions, I will never let disagreement with Republicans result in a vote for Democrats.

I agree with R.C. Sproul. What I wonder at is what has stopped Christians from rising up and stopping abortion, by force of arms if necessary. I made the personal decision not to do so twenty years ago after consulting my Bible, my pastor, and my Holy Spirit; but I confess surprise that many others have not taken a different stance.

Agreed. The homosexualization of our culture has also helped perpetuate the divorcing of sex from the procreative act.

Don’t be so sure about that. I wouldn’t be surprised if such a thing would further desensitize society to the process of killing.

Sanctions against abortion are also suggested in the Hippocratic Oath, from 5th Century BC.
