America is set for the coldest month of the century as weather forecasters predict yet another freezing blast of Arctic air - putting Super Bowl Sunday in jeopardy.

Teams have been warned to stay on high alert for changes to the scheduling of the first Super Bowl to be played in an open-air stadium. Temperatures have already hit record lows, at times making parts of the U.S. colder than the North Pole, and are expected to plunge in the coming days.

That would trigger an ice age. The earth loses heat in low latitudes and mid latitudes in summer but not in winter or in high latitudes. If it does, then the oceans will cool rather rapidly starting at the poles and permanent snow will quickly build up on the continents. That would continue as long as the meridional flow you described continued.

Ya know they call it global warming when it’s hot, and climate change (caused by gore-bull warming) when it’s cold.

I agree. It didn’t before the flood because, kinda like Venus, we had a very thick cloud cover as described in Genesis. When the flood happened the bible says “the windows of heaven were open”. One interpretation is that that was the first time people could see the moon, the sun and the stars.

BTW, in the book I mentioned. the author makes the argument that the earth had a close encounter with another planet (say mars or Venus or some other) that also had an ice moon. This ice moon was the rain as well as a fair amount of our polar ice caps. It may be that the continental shelves really were below sea level before that. He also suggested that the earth and this other planet spinning around each other ripped up a new mountain range with each revolution.

This constant media-driven hyperbole over the "cold winter" is quite annoying. I've spent the entire winter in the Northeast and I'm in Manhattan for the past week including over this weekend.

It has been business...as...usual.

We were walking back through Times Square last night during a little snow squall and all the outdoor vendors were conducting business, they were working on that Super Bowl staging, restaurants were crammed with patrons and all the Broadway shows were sold out. Even the famous New York City rats were seen scurrying about (I've developed a keen eye for them).

Big Apple not missing a beat despite the "icy winds" and "wind driven snow". Which used to be considered normal January weather until this climate change frenzy has turned every single weather event into a political debate.

My heart is crying but certainly NOT for the Super Bowl or those who would attend. I’m thinking of how this bitterly cold winter has hit the people who have to heat their homes as they try to keep from freezing to death and IF, they have enough money to pay for the now expensive fuel which is drastically short supply.

I have a suggestion: “TAX all the players who would play and those who bought the tickets to attend the “game” and give that money towards the fuel cost for the people who are freezing to death. Those people are NOT the “Takers” of this country, they are the ones who actually work for a living (assuming they have jobs). Other than the workers at the Super Bowl, who really “needs” the Super Bowl?

The biggest fear is the possibility of temperatures well below 32 °F., snow flurries and winds up to 25 mph. That would make it a miserable playing experience for everyone involved and the fans in the stands would REALLY hate the experience (remember, about 35% of the seats are reserved for those who go there on behest of the official corporate sponsors of the NFL and/or the Super Bowl).

Ahh, but the “modern” Superbowl has much less to do with football today then when it began. Now, much of it is about outdoor entertainment ... on-field interviews; little-known bands at half-time; etc....

The earth may be warming ever so slightly on average, but New England definitely is not. I’m moving to Florida in 17 months when I finally retire.

I long for the good old days when football was a Fall sport, basketball was a Winter sport, and baseball was a late Spring and Summer into football season sport. and the weather report was a 15 minute filler with a guy standing in front of a small US map placing either sun, cloud, or rain stickers on it.

Everything was so much saner then.
