Molen says the charge against D'Souza could be an act of political retribution for 2016, a critical look at President Barack Obama, or an effort to stymie his next film, which is due four months before midterm elections...................No doubt about it.

My thoughts exactly.
I would think also that with an enormous amount of publicity, it might be difficult for the government to continue to selectively prosecute/persecute conservative donors. When it’s just some poor schmuck in Podunk that they go after, no one notices (even if he happens to be a local Republican mover and shaker), but when they go after someone like this with national prominence, that is going to be noticed.
