Until the Germans attacked the Soviet Union, the cry from the Left was “No intervention” in European wars.

Be fair, that also was the cry from many on the Right.

Actually, it was Pearl Harbor not Germany attacking the Soviet Union that was the game changer for many on the right.

There was a strong isolationist movement in the US during the 1930’s, including the “America Firsters”. However, most of them left it when Pearl Harbor was attacked.

Reality had finally broken the self-imposed wall of ignorance about what was going on in the world.

That wall is being reconstructed by both the Left and the Libertarians today, even as the threats to our survival are more extensive and deadly than ever.

My father-in-law fought on Iwo Jima; I was in Vietnam and Cambodia as a journalist; my son fought in Iraq. We know the threat of isolationism, self-imposed blindness to reality, and the costs we have to pay to repel the enemy due to it.
