Seattle's Socialist councilwoman to accept less than half of $117K salary

Seattle’s only Socialist City Council member announced Monday that she will make good on a campaign pledge and accept only $40,000 a year in salary — bringing her down to the average wage of a worker in the city.

The remainder of the roughly $117,000 salary will go to social justice causes such as strike funds, civil rights and women’s rights, she said in a statement.

"Every Councilmember faces a choice of who they represent and which world they inhabit,” said Kshama Sawant, who took office earlier this month. “My place is with working people and their struggles. I want to give a voice to workers, trade union members, women, and immigrants. As a Councilmember, I re-commit to a fundamentally different political outlook. In line with the principles of the political party I represent, Socialist Alternative, I pledged to stay accountable to working people by taking only average workers' wage.”

I got to say - that is refreshing. But I would have thought she would be using the money to turn the Boeing facility into a bus manufacturing business owned by the workers. (Another of her campaign ideas!)

She sounds so ‘sincere’, so ‘clean’, so ‘unspoiled’.

But carry her logic further to its ultimate end and ask the question “Do low income struggling workers really want socialism?”. The answer is hell no! They want upward mobility. They want out of the class they are in and want in to a better paying job that is reachable by a combination of education, refined communication and good work habits and presentation.

Sorry Kshama but you are not where it’s at.

You got yourself a gig in government during an off-year election with record low voter turnout.

You could not as a member of any council help build a world class city like Seattle.

And you bring nothing to the table except a failed and murderous philosophy.

As soon as Obama is history, you are too.

Perhaps your seat at the table will provide you an education as to how important it is to manage a city well.

For those not in the know about Seattle, downtown subsidies are already provided to hotel, restaurant and retail store workers so that they don’t go elsewhere. Apartments are often provided at 25% to 50% and meals are free. Seattle University, Seattle Central Community College are less than 3 miles away and a frequent bus can get one back and forth in 15 minutes one way with monthly bus passes often provided by the employer.

Where Kshama comes from she doesn’t like the high price of housing in Seattle. She’s the type that would push for Santa Monica type rent control leaving structures to decay without maintenance thereby creating a ghetto. Anyone who saw Santa Monica in the 1980s knows what I am talking about.

The American dream was not meant to be life in a minumum wage job. But Kshama wants all those busboys and dishwashers paid $30,000 a year with benefits.

Yes, she’s a nutcase and Seattle has its share of Kshamas.

All in all Seattle is a fine city that is liberal only because of its union history. Much of the business establishments are not liberal, not conservative (openly) but just practical. Seattle voters are really tough to get a tax increase by.

A lot of the anti-corporate attitudes in Seattle are leftover from the 1960s era when unabated pollution, stupid freeway designs and lack of pleasant living space along with armed gangs were the norm.

Today most of the 20 and 30 somethings living in Seattle are left of center or middle of the road and the trend is drifting right. Although last year’s mayor election brought in a homosexual mayor, this is a flash in the pan that will pass as soon as Obama is swept out of power.

Seattle wants more than anything to be ‘cool’, ‘hip’. But these days everyone is mostly shrugging their shoulders waiting for the current malaise to pass.

But there are good work habits and good attitudes. The youth are mostly receptive to alternative viewpoints such as conservative perspectives as long as the person presenting their views is ‘cool’ and ‘hip’.

As if they make their millions off of the salary...
Keep an eye on her net worth. Also note: her charities are not real charities helping the needy but political to help socialists.

At $40k, the socialist wack-a-doodle skank is grossly overpaid.

Socialist. You know, like the socialist paradise of North Korea where the government murders entire families. She should be so proud.
