It was Soviets who engineered their national identity for the first time, it was Ukrainian nationalists abroad who has shaped it, and different Ukrainian government agencies are continuing up to this day. Pretty much similar to “Afro-American studies” in US.

You are incorrect. Ukraine was a nation under Prince Yaroslave the wise who was hetman of the Kievan Rus. Ukraine was Christianized well before Russia and maintained strong ties with Byzantium. The Tartar invasion turned things upside down and as they were driven out Ukraine came under control of Russia
