A disappointing report on iPhone sales, along with a revenue forecast that failed to meet Wall Street analysts’ expectations was enough to hammer on Apple Inc.’s AAPL +0.33% shares by more than 7%, to around $509 on Tuesday.

And anyone who knows anything about comparison shopping will tell you that the best time to buy something is when it’s on sale. Which is what Carl Icahn said he did with his latest purchase of Apple stock.

He put down $500 million dollars on his pick, which is a little more serious than writing a column about the future of Apple. This guy must be right a lot more often than he is wrong. I would not characterize him as a tool. A man who can talk with Tim Cook whenever he wants is more of a tool-wielder.

Sorry, but the market has spoken. To whine about it only makes you look like a tool, and I don’t care how much money you have in the bank.

And FWIW, a lot of people do not like Icahn as he is trying to bully his way with AAPL. “Corporate raiders” are now “shareholder activists” for some reason.

“disappointing report on iPhone sales”

Samsung has been outstripping Apple in sales and development for a while a now. They produce far more modern “smart” devices and do so more economically than Apple. Apple has the world on a string when it released its first iPhone, all but killing RIM in the process, but they have not been keeping up with the competition over the last few years. Maybe resting on their laurels or Jobs’ death more a factor than they wanted to put on.

Have both, and have to say that although Samsung has great screens, high-speed processors, etc. etc., they honestly don't come even close to the iPhone in terms of dependable seamless functionality. iPhones just work. Samsungs, in my many year experience, have lots of bugs that pop up at unexpected times. IMHO.

Interesting. My experience has been just the opposite. In the last several years three immediate family members have had iPhones. Every one of them has been back to Apple at least once (one of them 3 times) for a hardware or OS related issue that was un-solvable by the user. In one case the entire phone was swapped out. My son has an iPhone now that needs to go back (2nd time for him and this phone) because the screen glass is separating from the backing and there is a gap forming. I don't know if the back is warped or what...

Contrast that to many years and several different Samsungs I have had as well as another family member. IIRC once or twice we had a lockup with the Android OS and had to power-down the phone and reset it. Wife's experience with last two iPhones was bad enough she left contract early and switched to a Moto X after having been an Apple person for years.

One word (or is it two?) iTunes. You can make a good argument that phone versus phone Samsung’s is as good or better than Apple’s but the Android Market Place does not come close to iTunes. Between the Apps, Music, Video and iTunes-U Apple is light years ahead. But if you just want to make phone calls and check the weather get a Samsung.

That's horrible. I would think that if those are common experiences, Apple will pay the price for poor workmanship. Those sound, however, like things that could be attributable to who Apple is outsourcing their manufacturing to (not an excuse, just an observation). My point was just that the iPhone functionality is in my opinion a lot more seamless and solid than the Samsung functionality.
