Actually, that might potentially be an excellent opportunity for an almost-classic Special Forces mission.
SF could go train the ‘vigilantes’ and then train the Federales on how to work with them in a mutually-beneficial manner.
It’s in our interest to help out because what happens in Mexico never seems to stay in Mexico. Even if we locked down the border this afternoon, it’s still in our interest to have as much stability and peace as possible next door.
If they are “legalized” then the Cartels will know who they are, and the Mexican Police will come for their guns.
Better to keep the Mexican government at an arms length.
This reminds me of an enterprising Russian who provided guided trips off the coast of Somalia to shoot Pirates.

Actually it’s in our best interest to have as many dead cartel members and corrupt politicians as possible. Hopefully that would spillover into similar results here.

This is a false-flag operation by the Mexican government.
When you opponent is popular, ask him to join you, then over time you corrupt him until he is finally part of the establishment. Don’t fall for it vigilante groups.
Mexico has had a long a moderately comfortable relationship with a rural defense corps, known as Rurales. While the international myths about the Rurales, both the good and the bad, are exaggerated, the truth is that the *intent* of the organization was supposed to be roughly based on the Texas Rangers.
The Mexicans had a good, long look at the Rangers during the Mexican-American war (1846-’48). The first Rurales were organized just 13 years later. The Mexicans noted that a relatively tiny number of Rangers were very effective in controlling large rural land areas. In both cases, their ability to collect information in an area was just as important as directly doing things.
So it’s best to thing of them in terms of an intelligence gathering network.

The Mexican federal government and armed forces are riddled with corruption paid for (and terrorized by) the cartels. Different heads of the same hydra.

This is an excellent idea. One of those, win-win-win deals. The locals get both some hard foreign currency from the hunters as well as help in killing out the local animals, and the hunters get the thrill of the ultimate hunt as well as the pleasure in helping to make the world a safer place for the decent folk.
It would also make an excellent reality show!
Some retired special ops guys outfitting regular Joes. Take some guys out with some excellent weapons, night vision, and setup an ambush. Better than prairie dogs and wild hogs.

I was thinking something more stealthy. Long distance sniper shots day or night, gillie suits, night vision, ceramic chest armor plates, etc. MAYBE some IEDs. And definitely ex-special forces safari guide/outfitters. Would pretty much be a sport for the very rich. Million dollar, non-refundable deposits to weed out the riff-raft. Make a good movie.
