When President Barack Obama called on Congress to pass an immigration rewrite this year at Tuesday night’s State of the Union address, House Republican leaders responded with applause and ovation.
Speaker John A. Boehner of Ohio clapped from the dais while Majority Leader Eric Cantor of Virginia and Majority Whip Kevin McCarthy of California joined him from the House floor. Budget Chairman Paul D. Ryan of Wisconsin jumped to his feet just a few seats away.
But by and large, members of the House Republican Conference in attendance remained seated and stoic, un-enthused at the prospect of undertaking the politically perilous immigration overhaul during an election year, or at all.
As Republicans head to their annual three-day retreat, the challenge for leadership is to ensure that if the team chooses to rise in favor of immigration changes on the House floor again later this year, their conference follows.
What remains unclear is whether leadership has a solid strategy to round up the support. Boehner will unveil a one-sheet document this week laying out principles for the rewrite, but most members have not seen it and some acknowledge it may be rejected outright.

Republicans have been in retreat for a lot longer than three days. Retreat is their permanent condition.

Sure they do. Their plan is to get 20 or so RINOs to sign on and then pass it with the Rats.

If the GOP actually participates in “I’m-an-illegal-gration” reform, they’ll be retreating, all right.

LOL, I am glad I read the posts first. I immediately thought the same thing, and I did not want to steal your thunder. I wish Boner and his henchmen would just make it official, and join the rat party, because they are rats at heart anyway. Some time ago, I saw Boner on TV, saying he was as conservative as anyone. Right away I thought he certainly has something in common with the rats. Every time he opens his mouth, he is lying.
It's difficult to express my contempt for Ryan, or any other politicians who continue to repeat that same meaningless drivel that everyone knows would never happen even if written into a law. "Paying back taxes" would be filing for EITC in many caes, if not most.
Ryan is turning into quite a RINO superstar.
Radical cuts in spending would solve many of the other problems in time. Continue raising the debt ceiling, and the default process will hasten.
