Netflix Documentary Shows "Mitt" Like You've Never Seen Him

“I can’t fake it,” then-presidential candidate Mitt Romney said as the political advisers and family members nearby deflated. They knew what that meant.

The scene, which occurred during the heated 2008 GOP primary battle between Romney and his rising political adversary, Senator John McCain (R-AZ), occurs early on in the new Netflix documentary, Mitt. The film premieres on Netflix at 11 AM today and offers a rarely-seen look at the former Governor and his family as they trudge through two seemingly-endless presidential campaigns.

Director Greg Whiteley was given great access to Romney during those campaigns, and he uses it to craft a delicate but commanding voyage into what it means to be a presidential candidate today. The feature begins and ends with the results of the 2012 election. We all know how the election ended but few of us know what it’s like working day-to-day on a presidential campaign and seeing the disparity between a candidate’s real personality and the caricature of him that’s presented to the public (“the flipping Mormon,” as Romney says).

Leaving superficiality aside, Mitt offers up an intimate look at this skilled politician, and a man who— if things had been different— could’ve been president of the United States.

When he notes he can’t “fake it,” he’s talking about the long odds against him in the 2008 primary. After losing Florida (thanks in part to Governor Charlie Crist’s endorsement of McCain), Romney knows that his opponent is unbeatable. The former Governor could, as some presidential aspirants would, continue to give the same stump speeches, the same talking points and the same fundraising calls he’s done a million times before. But he refuses. He can’t fake something he doesn’t believe in anymore.

And one of the most compelling aspects of Whiteley’s well-organized feature is how open the candidate is to the camera, even during moments of great sadness and heartbreak. While some of the candidate’s best-known attributes are on display (his business acumen, for one), the documentary also presents a more fully-rounded portrait of Romney and his family.

Bingo! As a matter of fact, the LAST thing we need is a candidate the media likes - PERIOD.

If they like him, he’s no good.

I know they hate Ted Cruz and he handles the media well.

They practically french-kissed McCain until he was nominated.

Then they stuck the knife in his back and twisted.

Course that ignores the fact he stuck the knife into the side of his head and twisted.

NO MORE RINOs. We’ve waited long enough to watch the Left in the Republican party have their way. It’s our turn damn it.

This makes the unfounded assumption that we would like to see him again. I’ve seen all I need to see of Willard RINOmney.

I could have said the same thing. But if you have Netflix streaming, the video might change your mind, at least a little.

Does it bother you that after the nomination he reverted back to being pro-abortion and came out against the party's pro-life platform, and that he ran pro-choice ads in Ohio, Virginia, and Wisconsin?

If that's true, it would bother me. But check out the movie. It's on Netflix streaming.

Mitt wasn't going to stop anything. Just like McCain, Dole, Hatch, McConnell, Cristie, Bush,..etc...etc...

Probably true, although I believe he would have voted rescind Obamacare. But my estimation of him as a man increased significantly after seeing this behind-the-scenes movie.

Its time we ran a Reagan clone and WON for a change!!

Can't argue with that. I'm for Cruz. But...

I learned something from this movie, and that is that Mitt is head-and-shouders above McCain and Christie.

It is true, how did you miss it?

(CBS News) In an interview with CBS Evening News anchor Scott Pelley, Mitt Romney said his views on abortion rights are more lenient than those put forward in the Republican party platform.

“My position has been clear throughout this campaign,” Romney said. “I’m in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.”

PELLEY: Well, the platform as written at this convention for the Republicans does not allow for exceptions on abortion with regard to the health of the mother or rape or incest. Is that where you are?

ROMNEY: No. My position has been clear throughout this campaign. I’m in favor of abortion being legal in the case of rape and incest, and the health and life of the mother.

OK, he’s wrong, but that doesn’t make him the anti-Christ.

Do you like Romney’s being a powerful advocate for gay power, and homosexualizing the military, and gay Boy Scout leaders and his kicking them out of helping during the Winter Olympics for opposing gays?

Mitt romney:
“” One issue I want to clarify concerns President Clinton’s “don’t ask, don’t tell, don’t pursue” military policy. I believe that the Clinton compromise was a step in the right direction. I am also convinced that it is the first of a number of steps that will ultimately lead to gays and lesbians being able to serve openly and honestly in our nation’s military. That goal will only be reached when preventing discrimination against gays and lesbians is a mainstream concern, which is a goal we share.””

Do you know how we found out the Romney’s supported planned Parenthood and that Mitt did fund raising for them?

He quit trying to deny it when the photo appeared.

Obviously Mitt has made some very bad decisions. But after seeing the film, I can only see these as errors, and not deliberate evil. Your conclusion may vary.

There is a difference between material sin and a formal sin.

Did Mitt ever apologize to Gov. Palin and her children for the attacks of his disgusting surrogates just prior to the Election of 2008?

I'm waiting for Palin to apologize for her embarrassing FB post supporting the disgraceful traitor McCain against his rightful censure by the Arizona GOP. Will she shame herself further by campaigning for him in 2016?

What I will never understand is the “two Mitts” that ran. In the Republican Primary he was ruthless. In the general election he was almost passive. What the hell happened?

What bad decisions?

These are lifelong beliefs and positions, not bad decisions.

Mitt Romney has always been the creepy, self serving, shallow creature that he is as he turns 67.

With Romney, as you dig, you only find more ugliness and a deeper commitment against what is good and conservative.

Start looking at him in his youth, through his life, and to now, he can spend 100s of millions to try and create a public image, but the inner man is just a disaster, his duplicity and level of dishonesty and his total disconnect from honesty and truth, are amazing to see.
