I own a small farm (inherited it a few years ago, which is the only way I can afford to keep it) and am insulted by the term “farm bill”. Since there are those who think farmers are all rich and drive Cadillacs, a few facts:
- Approximately 80% of this $1 trillion “Farm Bill” is for food stamps (and other ‘nutrition’ programs) - not farmers! Liberals have to hide their socialist spending addictions under non-descript names, like the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and the Affordable Care Act (ACA). BTW, the so-called $23 billion cut (over 10 years) is really just a reduction in the rate of increase. It actually represents an inflation-adjusted increase of $258 billion - that’s a 37% increase in real spending - most of which will NOT go to farmers.
- Americans spend 10% of their incomes on food the lowest of any country.
- For every $1 spent on food, farmers receive less than 12 cents for the raw products.
- Farmers will need to double food production by 2050 to keep pace with the world’s population.
So, the next time a liberal tries to tell you how good farmers have it, give them some facts - they hate that!
Thanks for posting that. I was scrolling down looking for attacks on “rich farmers”. One of the local lefties who writes frequently to the paper went on a rant about farmers having “nice houses and new trucks”. I recently found out he’s collecting disability checks, so who’s the one getting handouts?
