Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), the coauthor of the Senate immigration reform bill, praised House GOP leaders for issuing a set of immigration reform principles that reflect the Senate bill.
I think theyre fine, he said. I will support everything theyre doing and certainly will not take shots from the sidelines.
AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka called the principles a nonstarter and fools gold because they would not offer a special path to citizenship for the nations estimated 11 million illegal immigrants.
It means they would never get citizenship, never get a green card, Trumka told The Washington Post. Its a joke. Its a hoax, is what it is.
McCain said anyone slamming the House GOP principles right out of the gate isnt serious about getting legislation passed this year.
I think most people in their right mind should be glad that were seeing movement on the House side, he said. If youre going to start carping at them on the first day when they put out principles, then youre not serious about immigration reform. I say that to the AFL-CIO.
McCain declined to speculate whether legislation that fell short of offering a path to citizenship for illegal immigrants could muster enough Democratic support to pass Congress.
It depends on what you think is doable and whats not, he said. Im open to serious consideration of whatever the House of Representatives does.
Right now Im just happy that apparently theyre going to move on an issue that they have not for a long time, he added.
McCain said the 16-day government shutdown that sent the Republican Partys approval rating plummeting might have had a silver lining because it helped Boehner regain control of the House GOP conference.
If Boehner had not gotten control of his conference, this wouldnt have happened. Maybe there was a silver lining in the shutdown, he said.
Good bye GOP! We hardly knew ye!
McCain is the epitome of foolishness!
House GOP leaders tried to get us into a shooting war in Syria on behalf of Al Qaeda.
They are a clear and present danger to us and every one of these 5-6 corrupt “House GOP leaders” needs to be removed.
I wonder if McLame understands that he has no *real* friends in this world.Rats may pretend to like him...when it suits their purposes...but when the chips are down they’ll push him over the cliff....as we saw in ‘08.
John “just build the damn fence” McCain thinks the GOPe’s suicidal fixation on amnesty is a “silver lining”. Whatta maroon.
Exactly. Sounds like the fix is in.
Cut your own grass Juan or hire them yourself, let them live in your house and you support them.
Juan McStain always on the wrong side.
If the GOP passes any form of Illegal Alien Amnesty...there will not be enough Hispanics to vote for the GOP to make up for the Conservative base that will leave.
Secure Borders, 100% Deportation. Anything else is Illegal Alien Amnesty
The Kiss of Death!
Like Cruz said, the GOP’s longing for Amnesty is a deal breaker for 2014.
I’m waiting for Palin’s tweet saying she agrees with McCain.
