Investments in renewable energy were supposed to be a sure thing, with wind park operators promising annual returns of up to 20 percent. More often than not, however, such pledges have been illusory -- and many investors have lost their principal to boot.
Indications are mounting, however, that green capitalism will not be able to meet all expectations. In courts around the country, complaints are mounting from wind park investors who haven't received a dividend disbursement in years or whose parks went belly up.
Consumer protection activists are complaining that many projects are poorly structured and lack transparency. In the renewables sector, fear is spreading that the Prokon bankruptcy -- combined with plans for a reduction in the guaranteed feed-in tariff recently released by new German Economy Minister Sigmar Gabriel -- could scare away investors.
Should the average wind speed at a given site be just 10 percent lower than the forecasted value, for example, the amount of power generated will be 30 percent less.

I’m all for non-crony renewable energy that makes economic sense.

Pretty soon there will be the saying: “I have a wind turbine for sale” as in the Brooklyn Bridge saga.
The intelligent Germans say “Kein Urlaub in idiotenland”..meaning them windmills are loud and only idiots believe they’re useful.
A new owner might be able to make a bankrupt wind farm profitable, because there would be little or no remaining expenses for amortizing the capital costs. However, if the bankruptcy also frees the government of any obligation to pay ridiculously-high feed-in rates, then we can expect to see turbines coming down and sold as scrap.
That’s because the Hoover Damn can generate electricity for 2 or 3 cents. Wind is more in the 30+ cents range.
I expect to live long enough to see wind power abandoned and windmills dismantled for parts.
Are you including the protein value of the shredded poultry downstream?

That was the intention all along
I would like to get one of the generators (without the geartrain in front for the propeller) for a diesel-electric car, if I could get it cheap. Those generators are first-class in efficiency.

Hydro is a renewable.
Very true. But, tellingly, hydro-power is no longer considered "renewable" by the sages of global warming climate-change. No doubt, for the reason that it provides cheap energy forever.
