What’s Next on Keystone XL Pipeline: More waiting (State Dept. report released)

The fight over the Keystone XL pipeline is far from over.

Friday’s release of the State Department’s final environmental study sets in motion a series of deadlines in the coming months that will allow the public and federal agencies to weigh in on whether the long-debated project meets the broader U.S. national interest.

Secretary of State John Kerry has no deadline to make a decision, which means he could indefinitely delay the project if he chooses. Neither does President Barack Obama, if the project formally makes it to his desk.

An executive order from the George W. Bush administration lays out the process for the secretary of state to evaluate pipelines, bridges, water facilities and transportation projects requiring a presidential permit to cross U.S. borders.

The release of the State Department’s final environmental study signals the completion of TransCanada’s application for Keystone XL and the beginning of the department’s “national interest determination.” That 90-day period allows eight federal agencies — the Environmental Protection Agency and the departments of Defense, Justice, Interior, Commerce, Transportation, Energy and Homeland Security — to offer their views.

There was a time when the US would have built the pipeline with investor's money and Canada would have been balking, worrying about our resources being sold to the big bad Americans.

Today, the US is afraid to let Canada build a pipeline, with Canadian money, which will create jobs and make the US less dependent on non-North American sources.

I never thought I would live to see this.

This may turn out like the nuclear waste isolation project in Nevada. Many generations before approval.

Meanwhile, dangeous spent nuclear fuel storage pools are scattered through the country and world.

The Keystone XL construction project is DOA as long as the Current Regime remains in office.

If the Current Regime is replaced by another regime under Herself, Madame Benghazi, the Cold & Joyless, the embargo is certain to remain in place.

See post 2. It isn't fear, more like sabotage.

If I, alone, could, I would. Unfortunately, the selection process seems to be having some problems, not the least of which is the Mainstream Media.
