Report May Ease Way to Approval of Keystone Pipeline

The State Department released a report on Friday that could pave the way toward President Obama’s approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline.

The long-awaited environmental impact statement on the project concludes that approval or denial of the pipeline, which would carry 830,000 barrels of oil a day from Alberta to the Gulf Coast, is unlikely to prompt oil companies to change the rate of their extraction of carbon-heavy tar sands oil, a State Department official said. Either way, the tar sands oil, which produces significantly more planet-warming carbon pollution than standard methods of drilling, is coming out of the ground, the report says. Related Coverage

In his second term, Mr. Obama has sought to make his fight against climate change a cornerstone of his legacy. In a major speech on the environment last summer, Mr. Obama said that he would approve the pipeline only if it would not “significantly exacerbate” the problem of carbon pollution. He said the pipeline’s net effects on the climate would be “absolutely critical” to his decision.

The conclusions of the report appear to indicate that the project has passed Mr. Obama’s climate criteria, an outcome expected to outrage environmentalists, who have rallied, protested, marched and been arrested in demonstrations around the country against the pipeline.

“unlikely to prompt oil companies to change the rate of their extraction of carbon-heavy tar sands oil”

True enough, but it’s so true that everybody’s known it from Day 1.

Wasn’t it Rush who predicted this? I forget the premise, but of course it had to do with B.O. and money!

I believe it would have more to do with dismal polls, and the entire Democratic Party deserting him.

Nothing will ease the way for the Keystone XL Pipeline until the Current Occupant of the Oval Orifice leaves office. This is like the Tehran hostage situation when Jimmy Carter was President, nothing could be done until Reagan was about ready to enter the White House, then the Iranians could not release the 52 prisoners quickly enough.

The Keystone XL pipeline is being held hostage in much the same way,

Is it obvious that the NY Slimes didn’t miss the chance to put in a line about drilling for the tar sands oil contributing MORE carbon pollution to our warming planet?
Every excerpt from Slimes columns has the progressive agenda woven into its threads. When I don’t read the piece posted, my blood pressure remains in a healthy range.

Obastard will still nix it.

It seems to me that, with Kerry at the helm, if Obama wanted the pipline nixed, the state department report would have nixed it.

I thinks Obama's looking to play both sides of the fence; approve the pipeline to create jobs, yet create cover from his eco-loons on the left with this report.

>> the tar sands oil, which produces significantly more planet-warming carbon pollution than standard methods of drilling,

Nice of them to slip in a deliberate lie as though it were established fact. Big Media are horribly dishonest.

The “debate is over”.

Oil extraction from the tar sands “is a fact”.

The “overwhelming consensus” is to bring the Keystone Pipeline to America.
