Utah school district apologizes for seizing kids' lunches for unpaid bills

One of Utah's biggest school systems apologized Thursday and told angry parents it was investigating why dozens of elementary school children had their lunches seized and thrown away when they didn't have enough money in their accounts.

"This was a mistake," said Jason Olsen, a spokesman for the Salt Lake School District. "There shouldn't have been food taken away from these students once they went through that line."

The district came under national criticism after as many as 40 kids were given fruit and milk and their real lunches were thrown away Tuesday at Uintah Elementary in Salt Lake City.

This is overblown BS. The kids WERE given oranges and milk to drink.

The media is acting like the children whose parents HAD NOT PAID THEIR ALREADY TAXPAYER SUBSIDIZED FOOD BILLS were beaten with iron rods.

They were not.

But when you put that down in front of kids, then run in and snatch it up to chuck it in the trash, without them having any clue what the heck is happening, that is pretty crude to them. Those kids have nothing to do with the situation.

The school did not keep up with what was paid and what was not. The parents did not pay like they should.

But the food got in front of the kids by their screw-ups. They should have let this slide and then fixed their errors.

That type of public humiliation for a kid screws them up regardless of the whole issue of subsidized lunches.

So much of a picture of the future, when the taxpayers are drained of every cent they have and our country is communist run and owned by the evil left and rino right. I can imagine Americans standing in long lines for a loaf of bread and many will walk away empty handed depending on their former political views.
Conservatives will be at the end of the lines and starving because they were against the hate filled DC bigots who stole Americas liberty and freedoms and right to work as politicians sent work overseas by overtaxing them.
Better dead than red.

I would be curious to see who made this decision and how much the person gave to the Obama campaign.

Conservatives do not make decisions like this.

I failed to send money in for my son and daughter when they ran out of funds for their lunches...the school fed them and called me to let me know and I sent money in the next day. They didn’t embarrass my kids, they didn’t take my failure out on my kids...they treated the kids with respect and care and let me know that I owed. That is how this should have been handled!

Yes, let this be a lesson. They will come for your lunch soon enough. Fail to give allegiance to our Fuhrer and more than your lunch will be lost.

Yes we and preceding generations have screwed this country up. So the solution is to take food away from children.

ahhh yep

Yeah, I agree it could have been handled better, assuming the parents had NOT been warned already.

But seriously, it isn’t like the children were abused. The “horror” is a mockery of REAL abuse.

How old were these children who were expected to be filled up on a lunch of a piece of fruit and a box of milk? How old were you when that was enough to fill you up? A school child needs nourishment to have the ability to concentrate on schoolwork.

Not to mention the complete wastefulness of throwing out the food, which is just vindictive and stupid. I can’t believe some people here think it is OK to treat elementary school children this way. I don’t really care if their parents screwed up, and it appears that some of the were not in arrears, but in any event that part of the problem could have been handled differently. I cannot countenance adults being mean to children.

The parents were notified on Monday of no money for lunch in the accounts. On Tuesday they took away food already given to the students.

I agree, totally mishandled. Once the food was given, should have been allowed. You don’t give it then take it away and embarrass the students.

There should be ample time of notice between insufficient account balance and suspension of lunch.

Principle also could have called the students to the office and let them know of the situation before hand and not do in the lunch-room.

Also, as a parent, I am responsible for payment- and I should keep track of the funds needed.

I suspect their were some parents who kept letting it slide...knowing the school would feed them. Well hope this is a wake up call to the parents.

I fail to see how taking a kid’s lunch and throwing it away would not be labelled bullying (the most serious crisis facing our nation, they say) if done by another kid.
