Racist, graphic graffiti shakes up Mount Airy (Philadelphia)

PHILADELPHIA A quiet neighborhood in Mount Airy was shaken up Thursday by racist, anti-Semitic, and sexually graphic graffiti on garage doors and a church.

In purple paint, the perpetrators drew swastikas and penises, and wrote derogatory terms for African Americans, along with the names of gangs, on three houses on the 600 block of East Durham Street and at Germantown Christian Assembly on Mount Pleasant Avenue.

Graffiti was also found on the 400 block of East Durham, although the messages were not as offensive.

The neighborhood has been lauded for its economic, ethnic and religious diversity, so residents were baffled as to why racist messages would surface.

"People are more forward-thinking rather than regressive [here], and people are generally very nice," said Josephine Nelson, 65, who grew up in the area and has lived in her East Durham house for over 30 years.

"They would never have cause to feel that people in this neighborhood may be intimidating to them or anything," she said of the perpetrators.

"You can die 4 ya country but Imma live for mine," read one message scrawled on a garage door. "Be redy to die!" read another on the window of the church's office building.

“Odd” that it wasn’t considered a hate crime on Christians to spray paint on a church.

Identity politics only matters if you serve The Party.

Blacks did it themselves. Most incidents like this are fake to stir the pot.

There are “Satanists/Atheists” who’ve been caught spray painting hate on churches (as well as stealing “baby Jesuses” from Nativity displays).

Mount Airy is actually one of the few white neighborhoods in Philly.

That’s not grafitti....... it’s just tagging

After more practice, the inner artist will surface.

Just look at the feeling projected. The Swastika is not vertically aligned. The slight tilt off the vertical axis seems to imply the desire for a stronger communal connection

If it isn’t a gated community, then its easy for people to sneak in and do it.
Could be bored rich whites who wanted to get their ghetto on and tag too.

This is an urban zip that is exactly the demographic that you would think. the spelling and language is a clear indicator it's a youth and the purple color (who picks purple unless there's a reason?) indicates likely gang affiliation.

I'm going to go out on a limb and say a was Urbanites, urbaniting their own neighborhood? Just an initial assessment.

considering the combination of images involved Id give it being bored kids from that very neighborhood a 90 percent chance of being the perpetrators

I don’t have time to do it, but city-data.com lets you see the demographics down to the smallest census unit, by neighborhood.

Who "lauds" a neighborhood, anyway?

those effective traditional punishments would likey be far more effective than a slap on the wrist and 12 hours of “community service”!

hmm “community service”

It strikes me as highly likely that baraq obama’s “career” as a community organizer began ...as a result of his doing “community service” hours...

I agree.....nothing beats people up like a public shaming.
Like those judges who make offenders stand with a sign professing their guilt. Its a good, cheap way of dealing with non violent first offenders.

You don’t have to sneak in. Its not a “community” at all, its just another neighborhood...

“You can die 4 ya country but Imma live for mine,” and... purple paint.

The case solves itself.
