Whenever I see a story about an Indonesian volcano I think of the story of the British Airways 747 that flew through the ash cloud of just such a volcano and the ash caused all four engines to shut down.IIRC the engines were out for quite a while and the story went that some passengers were on their knees praying in the aisles.

And as the icing on the cake, the ash scoured the windscreens in the cockpit essentially blinding the pilots...
