North Korea is stepping up pressure on the US and South Korea to cancel a major military exercise due to begin next month, with a senior official warning that the drills will push the peninsula “to the brink of war”.

It was Team Spirit when I was there, I have no idea if it’s still called that. Somehow I “lucked” into being in four of them. My first one I was sent down to Osan AFB to the Army Liason Element of the 314th Air Division as an E-8 even though I was a PV1. Weird.

The night that President Park Chung-Hee (father of the current female president) was assassinated was about a month long. My ROKs in the I Corps bunker were going NUTS, as you might imagine. At first we thought it was the North Koreans, so we were gearing up for war.
