School officials are no fans of gun ban signs

BY DONNA VICKROY dvickroy@southtownstar.com February 2, 2014

It is a sign of the times, as well as a sign that is sure to become ubiquitous.

School officials want the public to know that in compliance with state law (House Bill 0183), schools, churches, government agencies and liquor stores statewide will be posting 4-by-6-inch stickers reminding the public, particularly those with a concealed-carry license, that there are limits on where a gun can be carried.

While schools didn’t allow guns even before the concealed-carry law was passed, they still are required to display the reminder. Some officials are questioning the mandate, and some find the sticker image disturbing.

Several Southland schools already have the stickers posted at entryways, including Reavis High School in Burbank, Incarnation School in Palos Heights, all four Lincoln-Way high schools, schools in North Palos School District 117, schools across Oak Lawn and Hometown, plus Eisenhower High School in Blue Island, Richards High School in Oak Lawn and Shepard High School in Palos Heights.

Others expect to have them visible within the next few weeks.

While complying with state law isn’t a point of contention, some school administrators find the sticker’s image to be a bit alarming.

“One of my biggest concerns as a principal is safety and security,” Tinley Park High School Principal Theresa Nolan said. “It is bothersome to have to post a sticker of a gun that says, ‘Hey, folks, leave your guns at home.’ ”

What the article won't say is a few of the teachers are worried that as a gun free zone anyone meaning harm can get into the schools knowing that there are no guns there.

Gun Free Zone = Shooting Gallery for the insane, for terrorists, and for criminals.

Taliban Agents and Al Qaeda Agents who WILL UNDOUBTEDLY be launching terror attacks in the Continental USA, where will they attack first.

Simple. They will attack the shooting galleries established by the idiot left. They will ransom whole schools of children, and they will slaughter the children and school teachers. They are already doing so around the world, in places like Thailand, Phillipines, Afghanistan,India,Egypt, Pakistan and Iraq.

That is why we need nopt pay any attention to “Gun Free Zones.” We have the second ammendment for a reason. As civil disobedience we SHALL carrt our weapons anywhere we want, concealed, and we will be the thin line that will be present to save the innocents that the idiot left refused to save.

There is NO SUCH THING as a gun free zone.

The image of a gun violates the “Zero tolerance” policy. A student would be expelled if they were caught with that sign.

“Exactly what the signs SHOULD say . . .”

Defenseless Victim Zone.

Criminals and mass-murderers: Please be aware that law-abiding citizens in this building have been disarmed and are defenseless and easy prey. Happy Hunting!

I’m thinking a cottage industry should spring up making just such stickers to put beside the others.

will be posting 4-by-6-inch sticker...

Can't they just go ahead, adhere to the regulation, afix the stickers, and then write a bit over them?

What I have in mind is using black paint, draw just a short six inch line.

Using a 4 inch brush.

Do “Gun-Free” Zones Encourage School Shootings?

This time, Cleveland.

A 14-year-old suspended high school student entered Cleveland’s Success Tech Academy, a gun in each hand, and opened fire, wounding four. Later, we learn that the shooter’s past included violent confrontations, mental problems and at least one previous suspension. A month earlier he told a friend that he intended to shoot up the school. But no one, apparently, took his behavior seriously enough to notify authorities.

Meanwhile, a high school teacher in Oregon, with a permit to carry a concealed weapon plus training, sought permission to carry her firearm to school. In fear of her ex-husband, against whom she filed and received two restraining orders, she wanted the ability to protect herself in the event he showed up. Furthermore, she argued that even without the fear of her ex-husband, the Second Amendment and Oregon state law allow her to carry her firearm to work. Her school district, however, prevents her from carrying a firearm to school.

This raises a question. Do shooters consider schools “gun-free zones”? Do they consider it unlikely that any authority figure — whether teachers or, in some cases, security guards — poses an armed threat? But in some school shooting cases, guns helped to end shooting sprees and minimize loss of life and injury.

Edinboro, Pennsylvania. A 14-year-old middle school student opened fire at a school graduation dance, being held at a local restaurant. The shooter killed one teacher and wounded two students and another teacher. The armed teenager was apprehended by the restaurant owner, who grabbed his own shotgun from his office and went after the shooter. Staring into the owner’s shotgun, the teen dropped his gun and surrendered.

Pearl, Mississippi. A 16-year-old sophomore entered Pearl High with a hunting rifle under his overcoat. He opened fire, killing two students and wounding seven. The assistant principal, Joel Myrick, ran to his truck and retrieved the .45 automatic he kept there. Running back, he spotted the shooter in the parking lot. Ordering the teen to stop, the vice principal put his gun to the shooter’s neck and held him until police arrived.

Grundy, Virginia. At Appalachian Law School, a disgruntled student on the verge of his second suspension entered a school building and shot and killed the dean and a professor. He then shot four students, killing one. Hearing the shots fired, two students, Michael Gross and Tracy Bridges, ran to their cars to retrieve their guns.
With guns aimed at the shooter, Bridges ordered him to drop his weapon. When the shooter turned and saw Bridges’ gun, he laid down his weapon and put his hands in the air. (My pro-Second Amendment documentary, “Michael and Me,” goes into detail about this incident, as well as others.)

Professor and economist John Lott checked 280 separate news stories in the week after the Appalachian Law School shooting, and only found four that mentioned the students who stopped the shooter had guns. The Washington Post, for example, said the students “helped subdue” the killer. Newsday wrote the shooter was “restrained by students.” The Richmond (Va.) Times-Dispatch, however, wrote that the shooter “was wrestled to the ground by fellow students, one of whom aimed his own revolver at [the killer].” Four months later, the Times-Dispatch detailed the students’ actions, including the second student’s use of a gun.

Exactly what the signs SHOULD say . . .

The problem is that the NO GUN signs have a picture of a gun on them, and as any good Leftist knows, that picture could be used to kill hundreds. i.e. it is in violation of their own zero tolerance policies of jailing 5 year olds for coloring a gun.

I can see how this would cause a problem. They call the police and drag a six year old off campus for drawing a picture of a gun or pointing his finger at at classmate and saying “Bang”. How upsetting it must be for school administrators to have to look at a picture of a gun on the door every time they come to work.
