Photo by Norman Dankelman I think. The battles around Julich and bridges built over the Roer River were the costliest battles for the 208th ECB. I have read the story somewhere on the internet and if my memory is correct, they had to convert to infantry after the first foot bridge was constructed. That was part of their job description. After fierce fighting there were finally enough infantry across the river that the Engineers were recalled to build more bridges. The original foot bridge was blown away by the Germans. It sounds like it was a truly desperate fight.
