It’s a fair bet that in a lot of cases, people setting up the free wifi are the ones hacking it, even if it’s the “official” wifi for the establishment.

I've always enjoyed the winter olympics but due to the regular competitons that take place year after year(world cup skiing for example), this is nothing but another race that just happens to turn up every four years.
With that being said, if I were a U.S. athlete, I would skip this one. The location is unsafe, the accomodations seem to be shoddy at best and I don't think Sochi has any noteworthy sites to visit......
I've been a skier all my life, skied lots of great places both in the U.S. and Canada, all of which could be a great place to host the winter olympics.
But I have never met anyone who has said "boy, I'd love to ski in Sochi, Russia some day"....LOL!

Almost immediately, all of Engels devices were exposed to malicious malware. Right, that's what 'being online' means pretty much in any case.
Analysis revealed some of Engels devices were transmitting personal data stored on his computer to a server based in Russia.
He's standing in the middle of Moscow and 'personal' data (what exactly, his IP address?) is sent to a server in Russia? Amazing coincidence!

I don’t know about public WiFi yet, so does that mean if I fall for a fake Starbucks WiFi, that they can hack my computer even if I am using a VPN and security programs, and https everywhere?

almost best to travel with a good used laptop that has nothing personal on it at all. disposable if toasted. And a burner phone that you can pitch as soon as you leave. Don't take your personal phone.
