BREAKING: Red Hot Chili Peppers: We Faked Our Super Bowl Performance
Associated Press ^ | February 4, 2014

The Red Hot Chili Peppers decided long ago they were never going to mime a live performance. The band made an exception for the NFL, it turns out.

The group’s bassist, Flea, said in a letter to fans posted on the group’s website Tuesday that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame members pretended to play along to a pre-taped track of “Give It Away” during the Super Bowl halftime show as Anthony Kiedis sang live. The request came from NFL officials who felt it was too difficult to pull off a completely live performance because of potential sound issues.

Did they confess to it because they got caught? Or did they do it because their conscience bothered them?

I would’ve preferred Bruno Mars had played the entire halftime. The invasion by the RHCP didn’t add to the entertainment value.

“This is front page news?”

Within the past couple of years I had occasion to give the kids a lesson in reality versus perception; I believe it was after a World Series. TV audiences saw a big fireworks show over the stadium that was edited in there; it actually took place miles away. A dose of skepticism never hurt anyone.

That’s likely part of it, but I think it’s more of a sign of our national drift away from biblical Christianity, even in our churches. Any number of pagan practices have been normed in recent decades.

There must be a lot of despair out there since the number of freaks is definitely going up.

Not only did they suck but they are butt ugly. They should have let Bruno finish the show alone.

Twenty years ago we were told we would be the first generation to have a lower standard of living than our parents; I could imagine what they tell these young people today. I’m shocked at how many of them have none of the dreams people had twenty years ago (having a family, buying a home - even buying a car). They have little to look forward to; they can’t even remember an America with plentiful decent jobs.

It was the highlight of that game since there was no game after the first snap from scrimmage.

The so-called "musical" half-time entertainment has degenerated to exhibitions of gyrating, writhing torsos and blaring, mind-numbing noise aimed at vacuous teeny-boppers and perpetual adolescents.

Greg Gutfeld (he of Fox's "The Five") had an innovative idea.....bring back the marching bands.

Agreed - tattoos, especially on women, are hideous.

I have yet to see one that doesn’t make an otherwise fine looking woman, look dirty and trashy.

I remember being in Buffalo at David’s Bridal Boutique with my daughter (one of the few non-tattooed). I watched as all of these gals tried on their strapless wedding gowns. Just about all of them had tattoos across their shoulders, on their backs, arms, you name it. It was quite uncivilized looking - really quite ugly.

IMHO, Paul McCartney was one of the best ever SB half time shows. I would take him again, despite his politics, over any of the so-called talentless tripe out there today.

it ALWAYS pre-recorded

This is not news

You can’t risk technical gitch then a billion people are watching

And performing outdoors in the cold does NOT give the best sound quality

I didn’t watch the halftime show but I caught a few bars of the song start and heard the laser focused Chili Peppers rhythm section. Probably faking it I recall thinking. But not because they couldn’t ace a live performance, rather because there is no way to set up fast enough. Although today if they can do a live vocal they can do all the rest including drums “in line”, meaning there is no air involved in the sound until it hits the PA speaker. They’d only need individual monitors and a mix of same in in-ear monitors. Makes me doubt that even the vox were live. One way to tell is to contrast the sound of the sung portion with any spoken words by the lead singer. I’ve heard where Madonna or Britney had this crisp studio like vocal and then when they spoke it was the usual boomy mess.

"...and he was even going overboard jumping around."

Overboard? Haha! Have you ever seen a RHCP concert? Hell, that was S.O.P. for Flea. There's a reason people will recognize the bass player in this band before they would recognize the lead singer. Flea is the main draw. He's an act all by himself.
