Obama: CVS Decision to Stop Selling Cigarettes Will Have ‘Profoundly Positive Impact’
WSJ ^

Posted on 02/05/2014 8:01:34 AM PST by Red in Blue PA

CVS, the country’s second-largest pharmacy chain, plans to stop selling all cigarettes and tobacco products, saying they have no place in a drugstore company that is trying to become more of a health-care provider. The White House released this statement from President Barack Obama on CVS’s decision: “I applaud this morning’s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop selling cigarettes and other tobacco products in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit smoking instead. As one of the largest retailers and pharmacies in America, CVS Caremark sets a powerful example, and today’s decision will help advance my Administration’s efforts to reduce tobacco-related deaths, cancer, and heart disease, as well as bring down health care costs – ultimately saving lives and protecting untold numbers of families from pain and heartbreak for years to come. I congratulate – and thank – the CEO of CVS Caremark, Larry Merlo, the board of directors, and all who helped make a choice that will have a profoundly positive impact on the health of our country.”

That’s interesting. You’d think with the pervasive surveillance cameras it would be easy to detect.

Just another reason to walk across the street and shop at Walgreen’s.

For the record, you and Barack are in 100% agreement. You must be proud.

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut now and then.

I applaud CVS’ move. I wish every retailer would do the same.

The only reason the tobacco industry still exists is because it is a propped up crony capitalist boondoggle, hiding behind the skirts of Big Government.

And if he said on a clear day that the sky is blue, I’d agree with him on that too. And I’m sure you’d last out at me and anyone else who agreed

Listen, a bunch of people including myself have spent a good amount of time laying out the sound business justifications for CVS doing this. Your argument now seems to be wrapped up in the notion that since Obama supports it (probably for reasons completely different than ours, but no matter) that we are automatically wrong.

Tobacco use is on the decline. And has been. Support for tobacco use is on the decline. And has been. That’s just reality, and it appears that you are having a lot of difficulty accepting, and coping, with it. I’m sure that at the turn of the 20th Century horse and buggy users/afficionados had very similar feelings about what was happening to them as well ..

Yup. Also, CVS's decision is clearly based on a long-term strategy. Long term planning is not exactly the strong suit of an addict/smoker.

Imagine this from ANY store:

"I applaud this morning’s news that CVS Caremark has decided to stop accepting EBT cards in its stores, and begin a national campaign to help millions of Americans quit taking other people's money."

Sound business decision?

Walgreens and Riteaid stocks were both up today substantially while CVS stock was down.

the market has spoken regarding this “sound business decision”

So that’s the reason those companies still exist?

Silly me. Here I thought people just liked to smoke.

And I thought all that tax money was being used “for the children” and “children’s health programs”.

Liberalism is sooooooo confusing! /s (it’s a mental disorder)

Why do you assume their business model is only to make people healthier?

I guess they should stop selling candy too. And get rid of the photo departments...nothing healthy about pictures.

What about toys? Are they making me healthy? How about the fact they sell chips and stuff?

Ridiculous point.

Hiding behind government? They same government that makes BILLIONS taxing cigs?

The “only reason the tobacco industry still exists” is because it’s a LEGAL PRODUCT and for now it’s sitll a FREE COUNTRY.

Take your ex-smoker attitude to some communist country and ban away.
