White students get better teachers in L.A., researcher testifies

Black and Latino students are more likely to get ineffective teachers in Los Angeles schools than white and Asian students, according to a new study by a Harvard researcher. The findings were released this week during a trial challenging the way California handles the dismissal, lay off and tenure process for teachers.

In the study, professor Thomas J. Kane concluded that the worst teachers—in the bottom 5%--taught 3.2% of white students and 5.4% of Latino students. If ineffective teachers were evenly distributed, you’d expect that 5% of each group of students would have these low-rated instructors.

A similar pattern held when Kane looked at teachers rated in the bottom half: 38.5% of white students had such an instructor; the number was 48.6% for African American students and 52.2% for Latino students.

Yeah, I thought the position of the Teachers’ Unions was that there are no bad teachers, they’re all good. That’s why it’s almost impossible now to rate any teacher performance, that info is always hidden from the public.

So .... how did this small study determine that the minorities’ teachers are “not effective”?

It might be just me...but is the alternative headline “Black and Latino Students Fail to Perform Up to Standards Using Same Teachers Everyone Has”?

I knew a woman, a very effective teacher, who was assigned to a minority school. She was doing a good job for the students assigned to her, but the female black principal had no use for white teachers in her school. The principal constantly hounded her about minutiae, such as the displays in the classroom: the capital letters had to be above the lower case, she spent 15 minutes on a topic instead of 6, etc., etc. This became an intolerable nightmare and she quit midterm.

I suspect that this same pattern is repeated in a lot of minority schools.

All they would have to do is put cc cameras in all minority-dominated classrooms to get idea of what it's like to try to teach kids who are either disinterested, disruptive, violent, dull, or a combination of all those things.

Many years ago black parents demanded black teachers, principals, and administrators for their children because supposedly black kids couldn't identify with a white admin. Well, they got all those black teachers etc., and they still can't learn. But they still blame whitey for all the problems.

“new study by a Harvard researcher.”

Harvard, I just determined, actually has a Hip Hop Analytic Research Institute complete with a director and assistant director. The assistant director was recently quoted giving an analysis to the song “beef” which was playing during the shooting by a white guy into a car load of juveniles in Jacksonville. He categorized it as thug music and his defense is he perceived a threat by what he believed to be an unrecovered firearm in the vehicle. So, why should anyone give any credence to this "study"?

I have a question. What do they continue to employ ineffective teachers?

I know... stupid question.

“The statistical difference here is trivial considering the huge error bars in this sort of analysis.
And of course there are many unexamined assumptions.
Given all this its obvious the study and press release are purely political.”

Exactly.

This is what biased sensationalistic poorly designed and controlled research looks like. That said, is this small percentage difference cited by the study responsible for the fact that nearly half those living in Detroit are functionally illiterate?
http://detroit.cbslocal.com/2011/05/04/report-nearly-half-of-detroiters-cant-read/

The real issues are very much cultural and societal, and cannot be addressed until we stop looking for scapegoats. As one comparison, the literacy rate in Kenya is near 90%.

To a Democrat, equality means every racial group should be saddled with the same number of crappy teachers.

A 2.2% difference is statistically significant from a grading system that is 90% subjective and 10% BS? AND his study has not been peer-reviewed????AND a judge AND an opposing attorney permit this kind of cr@p research to make it into a court of law?

“I knew a woman, a very effective teacher, who was assigned to a minority school. She was doing a good job for the students assigned to her, but the female black principal had no use for white teachers in her school.”

In their continual effort to explain why minority students perform much poorer than others, liberals DEMANDED that more minority teachers teach minority kids. This caused a greater demand for minority teachers who are typically affirmative action recipients (since the minority teachers themselves were usually poor students). The results of this folly are obvious to any non-liberal with a brain. The author of the study probably also failed to take into account the family structure and education level of the parents.

How are the teachers judged as “effective”. Isn’t it by the results of the students? Perhaps there is some disparity in the students in the various schools.

Now, let’s talk about the races of the teachers who are rated at the bottom of the list and in what percentages they fall. Or would that be racist of me to ask?

Applicants to “Education” degrees typically score in the lowest 25 percentile.

Regardless of skin color, kids are being taught by the lowest intellect graduates to continue the dumbing down of American society so to be more acceptable to socialist tyranny.

You are speaking as an educational outsider. I guarantee you that your plan would not work.

Students from "feral" urban ghetto backgrounds, with rare exceptions, have little interest in academic learning. In fact, there is a strong anti-education subculture afoot. Students who try to get good grades are ridiculed by the boors in classes. Often, they go along with the disruptive students in trying to derail the class to avoid being called "oreos" or actually being beat up.

It would not matter if you put the "best" or the "worst" teachers in front of such students. Why should the "best" teachers be rewarded for their skills by being placed into classrooms where they will not be respected, they will be the target of the lowest dirtiest gutter language, where they will have empty plastic beverage containers thrown at them, be spit on, and threatened if they dare to impose any sort of control ("Please sit down. Please be quiet. Please put away that cell phone.")?

And why should the students who strive to learn be "rewarded" with less skilled teachers? Is that fair to them?

Your proposed scheme of switching teachers between schools is also not realistic nor productive. Teachers develop educational communities within schools, find out their available resources, and maintain relationships with students. A student you had as a freshman might come to you for a college recommendation letter 3 years later, or you might get some joy at attending the graduation and seeing your "babies" off. Uprooting teachers is also very disruptive and wastes a lot of time with readjustments--perhaps the new school is farther away, perhaps there is little parking available, the time schedule is certainly going to be different, the intra-school procedures are going to be different, etc. etc.

Classes should consist of teachers to monitor and answer questions and a large screen TV of the best of the best teaching the class. There are teachers who hit it out of the park and the Bueller....Bueller......Bueller type.

So let me get this straight, study and hard work are dependent on the teacher? If Whites or Asians are doing well, it has to be because they were given superior teachers? The only reason Black inner city kids can’t read when they graduate high school is because the teachers failed them?

LMAO

Has Ebonics taught these people nothing?

Black inner city youth do excel in whatever they want to excel in. If it’s sports, they excel. If it’s music, they excel. If it’s the gangsta life style, they excel.

The sad fact is, the norms of the rest of society in too many instances, isn’t what the Black inner city kid wants to excel in.

Proper English in many instances doesn’t matter. Math in many instances doesn’t matter. Business administration type studies, just doesn’t appeal to them.

People, no matter their race, will excel in what they want to excel in. It’s the goals people. Do Whites, Asians, and inner city Blacks have the same goals? I don’t honestly think they do.

This isn’t intended to be a put-down. Blacks have a right to decide what their own goals are. It isn’t for me to tell them they are failing themselves. At some point it has to dawn on them. They have to be the ones to raise the level of their goals.

In the interest of fair play, a lot of Whites don’t develop goals and seek to achieve them in life. It’s my take that leaders in all groups are critical to the success of the youth of that group.

If there are a lot of leaders that are leading kids off track in these groups, it is up to the community to rid themselves of those people. Until then, not much is going to change.

Better teachers? LMAO

Black and Latino students are more likely to get ineffective teachers in Los Angeles schools
So you mean the teachers that the teachers union protects, hides and continues to pay becuase of thier past disgressions or the teachers who refuse to take thier lives in thier hands when going to work with students who dont want to learn and would rather sell drugs on the corner, those teachers?
