We know he was joking.

If the moderators don’t care, that’s a problem.

Really? Are you serious with that comment? What if that had been your mother? You are a real deal aren’t you. And Yes, I have had one and yes it hurts, but not to kick a 70 year old woman in the face. Jeeze.

I have to agree with you about a nasogastic tube. Fifty years ago I had one inserted that had a plastic bag attached to the end. After insertion they used a syringe to fill the bag with mercury to hold it in place.

Long story short: When trying to remove it the mercury would not be drawn out using the syringe. They finally just yanked it out in a mess of mucus, blood and mercury. The mercury that I passed never flushed out of the toilet.

with males, an anesthetic might be applied, B4 the insertion of the catheter with a syringe that pentrates barely into the tip of the opening in the penis; but prior to extraction only a topical lidocain solution is possible, which does not penetrate much to the interior where most of the discomfort and/or pain is felt

“Hospitals usually avoid catheters, due to the high risk of UTIs.”

Hah!!!

No they don’t. They want measured results of urine output for their charts AND anytime the patient is not getting out of bed much, regardless of ability to use the bed pan or a “urinal” type collector, and because the cathether is easier for them and they don’t have to rely on someone being sure the output is measured, they do it everytime it is administratively convenient FOR THEM.

2007 and 2010 - I told my doctors and hospitals the same thing and their response was a “Rhett Butler” response - no catheter, go find someplace else then. I even had one surgeon agree, at my insistance, it wouldn’t be required, during the pre-op consults in my hospital room, only to have him renege on the day of the surgery once I was in the pre-op prep room next to the O.R.

He stomped on her head. She was on the ground and he was stomping on her head. I read this from other sources.

There is some instances when catheters are needed, but generally they get removed by 24 hours. it is a JCAH requirement and also hospitals get dinged by Medicare if they leave in foleys too long. Most big time hospitals do not rely on foleys as a nursing convenience anymore.

I know the kind you are talking about - like a condom connected to a tube:

I asked for the use of such a device during one hospital stay in 2007 and they refused, saying it was hospital policy not to use them, they didn’t trust them to remain secure (I think they didn’t trust patients to not remove them, which rarely any male patient is going to do with a catheter that is inserted into the penis)

He needs someone to stomp on his stinking crazy head. Of course, he will plead something and get off because of his “ethnic” background.

Thanks,you’ve said it best.
I have 35yrs of nursing and I’ve had it.
There are very few grateful and thankful people out there in this day and age.I know a hospital is the last place anyone wants to spend any time and any procedure is not done out of enjoyment.

They do have side effects, you can get blisters down there. Constriction by the catheter can cause swelling. Not good.

I have endured a great number of procedures since I was an adolescent and have a great respect for the nurses I have had. I could not do that kind of work and appreciate those who do it. I can’t begin to imagine some of the dregs you have to deal with on top of everything else.
