In Canada, after years of massive noncompliance and enormous cost overruns, the Government finally threw in the towel and shut down their long gun registry. This in a nation which had firearm laws which most Americans not living in California, Illinois, or New England would have considered far too confining, and gun owners there would have vigorously protested (look at the recalls in Colorado).
Why anyone in government would think Americans would comply is beyond me, and I am shocked that as many complied as did.
People will only comply with the law as long as the law makes sense, for starters, after that, it is less sure that will happen.
When we have a government that picks and chooses when, where, and even if a law will be enforced, even to the point of breaking the law itself, the constituents of that government will act in kind when it comes to compliance.
Uh not exactly. The registry was introduced by the liberal party in 1993 and passed in 1995 with a deadline to register in 2003. The Conservative party campaigned against it for many years and it wasn't until they got a majority government that the registry was finally scrapped in 2012. To get this accomplished took a lot of effort and the battle is not over by a long shot. Some provinces still want the data and you can pretty much assume when the libs return to power they will try to implement it again. The gun control people are relentless and never give up. Never rest and assume a victory large or small makes things safe for our side. Anyone who back in the Bush years felt comfortable got a rude awakening with 0.
