Poll: Thumbs down on Vladimir Putin, Russia

With all eyes on Sochi for the Winter Olympics, Americans hold the lowest view of Russia and its president that they’ve had in two decades, according to a new poll. Sixty percent of Americans view Russia unfavorably, the most since 1994, according to Gallup’s poll out Thursday. Their favorable view of Russia nearly ties the low set in 1999 during the bombing in Chechnya and conflict in Kosovo: Today, just 34 percent of Americans view Russia favorably, near the 33 percent set in 1999.

Russian President Vladimir Putin also registered his lowest marks since first becoming president in 1999, per Gallup’s polling. Americans view Putin unfavorably 63 percent to 19 percent, continuing a trend that has grown since Gallup began polling on the Russian leader.

The low view of Russia follows a fall poll from Gallup that found Americans consider Russia an enemy rather than ally for the first time in 14 years, the culmination of a souring relationship between the two nations that has involved Russia harboring National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden, opposite positions on Iran and Syria, anti-gay laws that worried Americans about crackdowns during the Olympics and a publicly frosty relationship between President Barack Obama and Putin.

I am very surprised at this. My guess is they polled those low-information voters who love Obama. Friends on FB like and respect Putin much more than Obama.

Those polled: let me guess; polls taken in Kalifornia or the Northeast and identified themselves as left, liberal, gay, and under 30’s. No other votes counted.

Your response to a dubious poll is what you see on Facebook?

Oh, I’m sure Vlad is shaking in his boots! Better change his mind on homosexual propaganda aimed at the kids - otherwise those Western gays won’t like you.

Careful. Not all conservatives value authoritarianism (why they dislike Obama in the first place).

Seems to me there has been a concerted effort on behalf of our media during the Olympics to constantly trash Russia and Putin. There is no doubt that Putin was looking better on the world stage than Obama, and the captive audience during the Olympics is a prime opportunity to change that. This is the only tactic they have. They sure as heck can’t extol the virtues of Obama. He is a failure on the national and international stage.

Unfavorable is a pretty broad term.

It can include hate, fear and lower down on the scale disdain.

Presently, disdain is likely predominent

Absolutely.

Obama has been sooooo disrespectful to Putin.

And the fact that Putin warned us about the Boston bombers and Obama told Putin to go to hell.

I understand Putin’s background and I suppose he is looking out for himself first. But that is to be expected from him. Obama is supposed to be the “leader” of the free world and an example to other countries. He has failed miserably at that. But Obama is more dangerous because he is not looking out for America. He hates America, especially white America. As far as I know, Putin is okay with white people.

——I suppose he is looking out for himself first.——

It is possible, even probable, that Putin is looking out first for Mother Russia.

Russia will live or die under his administration. It is that simple. The danger at the beginning of his rule was and may still be mortal

Anyone who defends Putin is insane. A KGB thug that’s been “president” of Russia for 15 years. When do you think he’ll step down? Another 15 years? Very admirable. That country is a corrupt cesspool. No matter how bad Obama is, he won’t be president 1 day past eight years. Crappy that we have to wait that long, but at least he’ll be gone. Putin, not so much.

I know I’m a holdover from the beginning of the cold war, in earnest, in the 50s but I wouldn’t watch the Savior’s return if it took place in Russia.

And McConnell polls a little worse which I find terribly amusing.
