Comcast is monstrously profitable.

They can fund their propaganda outlets NBC/MSNBC/Weather Channel/etc without worrying much if those are profitable.

They are not profitable because they are good. They just basically have had a monopoly. Their stupid service is constantly going out and I am sick and tired of calling and having to speak to someone from India who I cannot understand.
I suppose you can tell that I just had problems with comcast today! :)

In the early days of cable, cable companies paid off crooked politicians to obtain exclusive territories, ensuring massive profits some of which can be recycled to political campaigns.

The advent of satellite and wireless systems is giving them some competition, but broadband cable is still pretty much the consumer gold standard.
